Wordplay

Wordplay is a marvellous thing
Finding ways to rhyme
It needs patience and vocabulary
And occasionally time

Syllabic sequencing is key
For some words just don’t fit
They need to flow right off the page
Needing humour, yes; and wit

Punctuation is important
But I don’t let it bother me
I want the words to do their thing
For the reader, don’t you see?

Thematics, they don’t matter much
(You can write ’bout anything)
It’s more important that the end result
Should make one smile and sing

So I’ll often read aloud the words
I’ve written when I’m done
For it’s important that they work for me
And give you, the reader, fun

Yes, it is a good idea to let the words do their things. Thank you.

    Your daily ditties I enjoy

    They make me feel inspired.

I too would love to write like you

And shall do once I’m retired (again)

The place that I’ve returned to

    Is friendly and secure

    The pace, though, is relentless

And will remain so I am sure

New carpet, suite and kitchen too

The goals I want to reach

How nice to have them shiny/new

All I have to do is teach

Not all, you know, there’s more to it

With hoops through which to leap

Books to mark; plans to write

Oh how I need to sleep

    Induction, meetings, observations too

I thought they’d leave me be!

But no – they want me guts’n’all

    Good job I’m quite happy

Pay day looms – t’will be the test

Is all the angst worth it?

I’m sure that I will do my best

To spend it – every last bit!

I too read my writing out loud sometimes, mostly just in my mind, to see if it flows in a nice rhythm or if it stutters. I also don’t give much of a though to punctuation, lines can be read many ways and sometimes a comma just changes the whole thing. (It could also be that I have got lazy)!

I tend to ignore the punctuation thing full stop these days. Sort of gets in the way of what I want to say most of the time!
