Quietness (haiku)

quietness, the solitude
of morning greets me

[A-Z April – day 17 – #Q]

All I need

Sometimes I can just escape
when I’m sitting on a train
Travelling to another business meeting
in the sunshine or the rain
I have my music and a playlist
and that is all I need
Watching the world rush by outside
whilst I travel on at speed

Sometimes I can just escape
to my special place on the beach
The bench beside the old fishing boat
from my home, in easy reach
I have my sea and its movement
and that is all I need
Watching as the waves crash on the shore
whilst my thoughts are slowly freed

Sometimes I can just escape
when I’m reading a good book
Caught up in the adventure there
each page a different look
I have my minds eye and its vision
and that is all I need
Watching worlds unfold around me
Literature as my creed

Sometimes I can just escape
when I’m writing something new
Capturing a moment for posterity
and in a year or so, review
I have my pen and my poems book
and that is all I need
Watching words take shape and form
Like planting a new seed

Groyne Two

We have a special privilege
as we live in easy reach
For when the sun shines bright and warm
we can just nip down to the beach

Watch the moving waters
have a cup of tea
soak up a bit of sunshine
or listen to the sea

We can dust off all the cobwebs
and breathe in the fresh air
and revel in the privilege
of simply being there

Overlooking Cardiff

Overlooking Cardiff city
Its towers proud and tall
The castle in its grandeur
made me feel fairly small

Its walls with Roman origin
stand majestic in the city
Only slightly marred by tower blocks
Behind it, more’s the pity

But bolstered by its history
it rises to the task
And reigns majestic over Cardiff
Who in supplication bask

[A-Z April – day 15 – #O]

Now the Spring

Now the Spring has found its voice
it is shouting out in yellow
‘Have some sun and warmer days’
it cries like a good fellow

Summer clothes and summer smiles
find the people, one and all
And sunglasses in abundance heed
that welcome Springtime call

[A-Z April – day 14 – #N]

Marvellous (haiku)

Hope today will be
full of marvellous wonder
(travelling again)

[A-Z April – day 13 – #M]

Looking out again to sea
The horizon’s far today
And I wish that I was out there
In this fine Sussex bay

Its vista is majestic
That curving view oft seen
From here to Seven Sisters
where a-walking I have been

The sunshine on the water
the reflection from the sky
all serve to stoke the wanderlust
as I wander slowly by

But I will see this again tomorrow
The view stays just the same
And though I have to leave it now
I can come back again.

[A-Z April – day 12 – #L]

Kept a secret

Kept a secret, it was mine
I looked at it from time to time
I put it in a special box
with hinge and lid but no firm locks
But it was hidden well from view
and rarely seen by just a few

But as time passed more secrets came
some by pictures, some by name
And my special box with secrets there
became something to show and share
Its purpose changed, the secrets stayed
But opened now and oft displayed

Its memories to have and hold
now bring a smile as we grow old
Every single one a treasure
Beyond a value or a measure
Something special bringing cheers
A captured glimpse of passing years

[A-Z April – day 11 – #K]

An ode to Elvis (2002 – 2015)

Elvis Presley’s left the building
but he’s in a better place
up there in doggy heaven
with a smile upon his face

With his brother, Basil Fawlty
he’s been with us several years
so we’ll miss his waggy tail
and his stupid floppy ears

The tennis balls in the garden
will stay there for quite a while
as they’ll keep alive his memory
and are sure to bring a smile

It won’t be the same without him
we will miss him, that’s for sure
but we have pictures in abundance
to look at, treasure and adore

Elvis Presley’s left the building
but he is jumping now with joy
so when the tears are gone we’ll jump with him
Our precious little boy

Elvis Presley and Basil Fawlty came from the same litter of Border Terrier/Jack Russell crossbreeds in May 2002. They’ve lived with us ever since. Elvis passed away peacefully on Friday 10 April. He’s survived by his brother Basil who’ll now be spoilt something rotten!

In jubilant mind I greeted another
day with a cloudless blue sky
Rising haze from the river promised as well
that the sun would be warm when on high

These are days of deep joy, like a tonic to ward
away all of those deep winter blues
and when faced with the choice of sunshine or snow
I know which of those I would choose

There’s a part of me that needs to be out on the hills
when the sun smiles like this of a day
so plans are afoot for my brother and I
to do more of just that come mid-May

But for now I’ll embrace this weather anew
it is all I could hope for and more
A kick-start to the summer that summons a cry
of a cheery and heartfelt ‘encore’
