Charleston Farmhouse

Spent an afternoon at Charleston
Bloomsbury evidential there
with paintings on the furniture
and wonder everywhere

Saw a snapshot of Bohemia
with plenty to admire
And, risqué elements aside
motivation to aspire

Stepped back in time a hundred years
at the Sisters’ kind behest
Found peace in their contented home
and in their garden, rest

Charleston House near Lewes in East Sussex was the home of Vanessa Bell (sister of Virginia Woolf) and Duncan Grant, a property closely associated with ‘The Bloomsbury Group’ for over sixty years from the outset of the first world war. The Bloomsbury Group included (amongst others) Clive Bell, Maynard Keynes, Virginia and Leonard Woolf, E. M. Forster and Roger Fry. [Photo – Jempics].
