Seal

On the rocks by an island
with the tide going out
I saw a seal lounging
and gave him a shout

He glanced up at me
and waved a flipper to say
I should have a good time
whilst at Whitley Bay

So with the lighthouse above me
I watched him a while
Then went on my way
full of joy with a smile

Whitley Bay

St Mary’s lighthouse on the coast
here at Whitley Bay
On a coastal island
at the tail end of a day

With rain flecks in the evening breeze
we crossed at ebbing tide
Careful not to slip and fall
though the slipway was quite wide

And from the island summit
‘Neath the white walls of the tower
we looked out to the northern sea
and its majestic power

This really is lovely place
in North East England fair
So we stayed a little while
and just revelled being there

The song of Spring

I’m sitting in the sunshine
in my garden, it’s still March
But the song of Spring is here
with the blackbird and the larch
And it’s warm outside the breeze
in the shelter of this place
And you can see how much I love it
by the smile upon my face

I’ve been stuck inside too long
but the winter is now past
Outside is getting ready
and its warmer here at last
The spring brings zest and substance
with a fragrance on the breeze
which reminds me that the summer
will soon be mine to seize

Comfort in Sound

I’m plagiarising something
today, but never mind
‘Cos there’s every best intention
and it’s not meant to be unkind
For I have (as to be honest)
done a thing I often do
Been listening to music
and the sounds I loved and knew
Albums I’ve not played a while
are a joy when they are found
For, as Feeder said some years ago
This is “comfort in sound”

Spiralling

And so another weekend
and another week to come
Life continues, spiralling
with work and play and fun
And time continues marching
though at times I am bemused
as it can go slow or fast or even
backwards! I’m confused.
Sometimes I can’t keep up with it
Sometimes it’s left behind
it never seems to be the same
and can’t make up its mind
Perhaps that’s part of getting old
or maybe it’s just me
So never mind, I’ll live with it
and let both simply be

Springtime Cheer

It’s in my garden again
the yellow that speaks of the sun
Forsythia glory shouting aloud
that Springtime has begun

And the green is lusher too
Winter fades away
The grass upon my lawn suggests
it’ll soon be mowing day

The time for that will come
but for now the yellow’s here
Replacing all the winter blues
with lots of Springtime cheer

Wales

Night falls on the city
as daytime fades away
the cranes are still and silent
just up from Cardiff Bay

The streets below are empty
whisper growing from a shout
as from my lofty view I see
that no one is about

This is the last time I will view
this scape as on the morrow
eastwards I will travel home
with just a tinge of sorrow

The week’s been long and, dare I say
that even if it fails
it won’t replace the lovely time
that I have had in Wales

Evening Gold

Silhouetted here in contrast
against an azure sky
Like giant insects waiting
cranes in silent protest lie
And glorious behind them
behind the Western hills
The sun sets o’er the city
and everything is still
This tranquil ending of a day
when all is painted gold
exudes a warmth, a calming
as the evening takes a hold

First Daisy

When I first see a daisy
in the sunshine I will sing
For it heralds Winter’s passing
and arrival of the Spring

History lost to time

Walked down the mile of Bute Street
to the pier head in the bay
Trod where the Glamorganshire canal
supplied the port back in the day

The canal bed now though long since gone
Coal dust replaced with grime
Its waterbed now carries cars
its history lost to time

Once it was said that you could cross
the bay across the boats
So many were there in the port
the age-old saying gloats

Now though the waters of the bay
devoid of shipping lie
The coal mines of the valleys quiet
no longer export ply

Yet in a new millennium
in twenty-seventeen
Regeneration gives the port
the best life it has seen
