Cherry Tree

Yes, I know my pretty blossom
looks quite lovely in the sun
But just you wait ’til later on
when summer months are done

It’s really not so very long
just four short months or so
Before another treasure
I’ll be ready here to show

For then my fruit I’ll share with you
and I know that you’ll be grateful
With bowls of luscious cherries
sampled from your kitchen table

Eight miles

Eight miles took us past the Ring
where the view as ever was
breathtaking in the sunshine
on the South Downs here because
(and I know that some will argue)
but this is heaven here on earth
A place that God has smiled upon
and with riches given worth

And that gift was on this lovely day
not lost on us as we
trod these eight familiar miles
with hearts of joy and glee

Blue, the beach, twilight and a wander

Lights in the far distance
across the darkening sand
In swiftly facing twilight
as night-time gathers and
the beach and sea reflect the blue
with a peaceful lapping sound
And we’re the only people here
with silence all around

This is a good time for a walk
and the pleasure it will give
Always thankful for this place
of Shoreham where we live

Because we can

We’ll walk on the beach
at low tide on the sand
as dusk descends swiftly
and everything’s grand
With the lights from the city
out there to the East
Shining bright like a beacon
for a visual feast

And the sea with its grandeur
turns tide once again
as its quiet lapping waters
sing their sweet refrain
We’ll go for a wander
because we can for a while
And take in all this wonder
each time with a smile

Easter smiled

Shadow of a crown of thorns
upon there on the wall
Contrasted in the brightness
sweetest thing I saw

Easter in reflection
The people bowed and prayed
Silence as the Spirit moved
His presence there portrayed

And kneeling in the quiet
the sun became the Son
as Easter with forgiveness
smiled on everyone

These dusty trails

I walk these dusty trails
the sun above my head
towards the hazy hills beyond
to which I have been led

And familiar they may
be to this Sussex man
But that won’t stop me going
for a walk, because I can

Allotment

We have a new allotment
It needs some T.L.C.
But it has a lot of promise
for a future yet to be
It’s got a lot of grass on it
which I will have to mow
But there’s some soil that’s ready
to use right now and grow

And it’s just around the corner
from where we live, not far
So we can walk there with a spade
and not need to use the car
It’s even got a little shed
where we can store some stuff
Quite handy for a cup of tea
if the digging gets too tough

We took a picture as it is
whilst it’s still overgrown
Something for comparison
when it’s been dug and mown
And when it’s had some summer sun
and rains have been and gone
We’ll hopefully have some produce
to show for what we’ve done

On the Downs

Up on the Downs
with sunshine and sheep
and lambs newly born
and hills always steep
and cows in the distance
and haze on the hill
and a marvellous view
that surprises me still

With good company
and dogs on a lead
and sparrow-hawks diving
on occasion at speed
This place just a moment
or two in the car
is always delightful
and spectacular

April Sunshine

A cream tea with scones
in April sunshine
Temperatures rising
and everything’s fine

Flowers are blooming
with scent on the air
Springtime takes hold
with substance and flair

And I’m in my element
now it has begun
Relaxed in the warmth
that comes from the sun

The Nottingham and Beeston

In Nottingham the waters
of the canal are quite tranquil
with new building now reflected
in the waters quiet and still
Iron rings along the towpath
remain in situ there
Yet no more to fasten barges
with slow horses unaware

Those days to passing memory
are I’m afraid resigned
Another age and fashion
to this place are now aligned
In fact the only traffic
in this peaceful place today
is my good self composing
some words along the way
