Lilac Lovliness

They grow in abundance
by the railway bridge line
And their fragrance in summer
is completely divine
Their heady perfume
just intoxicates me
So I took this quick picture
for you all to see

Mores the pity here though
that you can’t take a whiff
As this Jemverse blog
is not ‘scratch n sniff’!

Nature’s thrash-metal show

A clue when the sun
hides away from the day
and the mugginess grows
as the sky becomes grey
Then, as evening approaches
a splatter of rain
It looks like a storm
is brewing again

A rumble of thunder
as the night-time comes round
But in the gaps and the stillness
there’s barely a sound

Then from over the sea
a bright flash in the sky
as, restless, the storm
seeks to electrify
And we count down the seconds
as the thunder moves in
The cacophony grows
and turns into a din

And then we are there
with excitement and thrills
as the rain hammers down
and the floodwater spills

And the lightning’s as bright
as a daytime light-show
and each thunderclap deafens
and excites, as you know
Our whoops of excitement
are lost in between
as the storm gathers pace
with a whoop and a scream

It’s frightening and scary
and wonderful fun
But we’re always relieved
when a thunderstorm’s done

The claps become rumbles
and are less agitated
as we smile and relax
because now we are sated
And as the storm moves away
‘Til it’s hardly in sight
We will go back to bed
and turn in for the night

One of those days

It’s been one of those days
when the lingering heat
makes everyone glisten
from heads to their feet
And there’s nothing to do
when the weather’s like this
Though I know that for many
it borders on bliss

But I’m not complaining
(don’t get me wrong here)
As one can always cool down
with a really cold beer

Counting the days II

I’m not past my prime
yet sometimes I feel
it takes longer these days
to recover and heal

And I know that the sun
should help me feel well
But sometimes it seems
very much the hard sell

So I think what I need
is a break well away
A bit of a rest and
a nice holiday

And as luck would have it
that’s happening soon
A week’s cruise to Greece
that we booked back in June

Just four weeks away
so we’re counting the days
as we both need a rest
from this pesky malaise

Contrasts, a big pond and an affinity

As a rule you will find me
surrounded by green
I’m often the nicest place
you’ll have seen

The winter skies are
blue/grey and bright
The reflection of snow
glimmers by night

I am generally quiet
where peace has a place
I encourage contentment
A feeling of grace

The bustling city noise
brings me alive
People quickly moving
trying to thrive

My buildings are ancient
have seen many years
They capture emotion
of trials and cheers

The Bistros, the clubs
and the music joints
I have so many
I’ll not disappoint

The fragrance in my
environs you’ll find
will foster a spirit
that brings peace of mind

The smog and emissions
fill up the air
But for me it brings comfort
that here I share

And most who live here
will be known by a name
To my rural surroundings
attest and acclaim

Lovers to most
and friends to a few
My urban life, fame
and always anew

New Sofa

We have a new sofa
it’s lovely and green
And it is the best sofa
that we’ve ever seen

It’s a great one for comfort
for Sally and me
and is really quite perfect
for watching TV

So I’ll finish this verse
then lounge for a while
on our brand new sofa
with the curl of a smile

Beach Huts

Stretching to infinity
Beach huts on Beach Green
Painted many colours
Brightest you’ll have seen

Here on the coast in Sussex
a haven on the beach
A little bit of paradise
there in easy reach

And don’t they just look gorgeous
Their colours bright on show
Quintessentially English
all there in a row

A ray of sun captured

I captured the sunset
at the beach hut today
Late in the evening
with a golden display

Reflective and gorgeous
the warmth of the sun
captured right here
as the day is all done

Morning and a paddle

Went boating of a morning
Early birds out with the sun
When everything was quiet
And the day had just begun

The water was idyllic
With just a gentle swell
And the temperature was lovely
As by the picture you can tell

So I paddled for a little while
Watching from the sea
Then popped back home for breakfast
And a nice hot cup of tea

Dappled

Last night the moon shone bright within
a sea of dappled grey
As speckled night clouds gathered
at the end of a hot day

A sultriness lay heavy
and filled the air around
Exuding peace and quiet
as you could barely hear a sound
