Nasturtium Fields

Although they may be fading
in the sunshine here today
A field of bright nasturtiums
in proud exuberance lay

Yellows, red and orange
and in between some green
as wonderful a palette
as I think I may have seen

A last vestige of the summer
as autumn plays its hand
A colourfield to bring a smile
across the turning land

Reflected summer

Summer in the water
reflected by the green
Its millpond surface smooth
reflecting where I’ve been
Days of warmth and pleasure
bathing in the sun
Life exuding nature
enjoyed by everyone

And here beneath an oak
its boughs of green spread wide
I’m reminded of its excellence
reflections here beside

I wonder what’s down there?

I wonder what’s down there, I thought
when wandering through the woods
The pathway looked mysterious
so I went there as I could
It took me to the undergrowth
the canopy complete
And showed me the dark forest
damp sod beneath my feet

A fragrance met me in the air
one of wood and more
Its headiness, it pleased me
so I clapped a loud encore
And the path led me to something
in the Sussex forest there
But then swore me to secrecy
which alas I cannot share!

The nineteenth floor

There’s a word I feel from way up here
One born of peace and more
‘Serenity’s’ more apt I think
up on the nineteenth floor

I’m high above the London streets
its noise remains below
And I am free to sit and gaze
in peace and quiet you know

And though the steel and concrete
cannot replace the green
It still provides a haven
when to the city I have been

You’ll always find me smiling

You’ll always find me smiling
when the sunshine shows its face
Particularly in its summer warmth
with evidential grace
I’ll find a little corner
where I’m sheltered from the breeze
and spend some peaceful moments
‘Cos they’re always there to seize

And even when it’s cooler
and the autumn cools things down
The sunshine brings a smile
(always better than a frown)

Hanging out with William Morris

Took a trip to Standen House
Arts and Crafts atop the hill
Where the Beales once used to live
William Morris hangs out still

His designs remain on many walls
intricately fine
And on a Thursday morning
the quiet there was divine

We wandered round the gardens
had some soup and drank some tea
Then bid farewell to William
my soulmate Sal and me

Changeable Conditions

Big sky over Leigh-on-Sea
dramatic to extreme
with rain clouds scudding twixt the blue
amongst the best I’d seen
The sunshine when it finds the room
is very warm and bright
But the rain squalls cool that down somewhat
So I’m glad I dressed up right

Autumn after all it seems
may have arrived to stay
with changeable conditions
as the weatherman will say

Nine bells

It blew nine bells again last night
But you’d never know this morning
As, when the night time clouds had cleared
A lovely day was dawning

The sun was bright, the sky was blue
and the wind had disappeared
Something of a respite
from the cooler day we’d feared

September warmth stays with us still
The summer’s not yet gone
Delaying start of autumn
though it won’t be all that long

Sunshine Bright

Dawning bright, I know you well
you are a friend of mine
Always welcome, never shunned
the warming bright sunshine
I smile upon your dazzling face
I squint into your glare
And always come alive a bit
whenever you are there

Sea Lane Surfers

By afternoon the wind was up
And the tide was really high
So we drove down to Goring
To watch the surfers fly
Sitting in the cafe there
With a coffee on the side
We had a perfect view
Of the rough and surging tide

Protected from the elements
We watched them find big air
Flying with their massive kites
Out on the white caps there
And it was exhilarating
For us and them as well
Watching as they flew and surfed
Out on the Channel swell
