Last day haiku

The last days arrives
And as now the last year fades
we welcome the new

…with a festive smile

I found a moment over Christmas
Penguin Cafe in the air
In the oven, turkey roasting
whilst I was sitting there

My pen, it found the paper
and words came, as they do
from time to time as inspiration
a poem to eschew

And I sat in contemplation
and wrote a little while
for some moments over Christmas
with a big, wide festive smile

[The Penguin Cafe orchestra was the brainchild of creative lead ‘Simon Jeffes’ until his passing in 1997. Hard to categorise, suffice to say that Penguin Cafe carved their own little ‘je ne sais quoi’ in the world of musical genre. Here’s a little slice…]

Day after Boxing Day haiku

And though the star stays
Yuletide festivities fade
as resolve takes hold

Boxing Day (haiku)

And Boxing Day comes
Fatigued, we have rest today
but the star still shines

Christmas Day (haiku)

The joy has arrived
Christmas Day as Yuletide falls
And a star is born

A walk on the beach

It’s the day before Christmas
so a walk on the beach
seems like a plan
as it’s in easy reach

And tradition would have it
that on this day every year
All Crouchers together
go walking with cheer

So we’re off to the beach hut
for a hot cup of tea
and a play on the shingle
and a look at the sea

And then we’ll walk back
after moment’s reprieve
to our home back in Shoreham
on this Christmas Eve

Christmas secret

I’m working on a secret
for the Christmas holiday
Industrious with envelopes
in a mysterious way

No-one knows the secret
It’s safe up in my head
and lips are sealed as rumour
like a Chinese whisper spreads

I’m working on a secret
that will quite soon be known
and the box will then be open
with all its contents shown

Revealing yet more secrets
in envelopes all sealed
Riddles to be broken
before the treasure is revealed

Tri-Tanka II (Festive)

All decorations
up by first of December
Christmas is coming
Though earlier every year
commerce would have us believe

No bah and humbug
despite my reservations
As into spirit
flowing with the tinsel here
my heart goes to the yuletide

And into the fray
firmly with gusto I tread
‘Ho ho ho’ sung loud
I am the voice of Christmas
Seasons greetings one and all
