Small yellow

And then there’s small yellow
the voice of the Spring
which always each year
brings reason to sing
For this yellow, resplendent
like a slap in the face
tells winter still lurking
to be gone from this place
As now are the times
for the warming of knees
and the walking on sand
beside summer seas

This yellow like sunshine
grabs hold with embrace
imbued with a gifting
born simply of grace
And in small yellow flowers
Forsythia gives
a voice to the Spring
and the reason it lives
Reflecting the sunshine
with colour and more
it gives us the promise
of what lies in store

Spirea Arguta

As if I couldn’t tell, the Spring
was evident today
As with flowers white and delicate
Spirea had a say

Arguta genus, Meadowsweets
It’s always first to flower
for shade within my garden
from its small yet fragrant bower

About a book from Venice

Started last September
Eight months of poetry
My little book from Venice
has served me faithfully

But now alas I’m reaching
the last few pages here
A few more days of writing
before the end is near

That’s when this little book
I have carried every day
will join all of the others
in my study on display

And then I’ll have the pleasure
of starting up another
A book of poems filled
from the front to facing cover

As a poet who writes daily, I carry an ‘ideas book’ with me everywhere I go. I’ve done this for years now but still have every one. They each last between 6-8 months each. This one was purchased in August last year whilst visiting Venice, Italy. When finished later in April, it’ll join the others – now numbering just shy of 100. Each is a a treasure. Photo – Jempics

Friendship

I met a friend
he wasn’t well
we chatted for a while
And when I left
he said he felt
quite better with a smile

I wondered at
the truth of that
if humour had a part
But in the hug
he left me with
I knew it came from heart

So homeward bound
I felt relief
though with resolve I’d say
to keep an eye
for friendship true
grows stronger every day

About a journey

I wrote about a journey
I started way back when
the words that found their way
to the pages from my pen
were from an adolescent
who hadn’t yet found life
yet wrote as though he knew it all
through torment, angst and strife

But as the years have passed
and my poetry has grown
those words have mellowed somewhat
as my publishings have shown
For now a sixty something
I have seen a life and lived
And used my words to capture that
as living is a gift

Comforter

Music as comforter
enters my soul
Enlightens my mind
keeping me whole

Blue Night

Night of blue aligned
the stars behind the moon
And in this dark sky
brightness
as clarity subsumes
all within its grasp

Of summer

Strong, fresh cold winds
blow through me
like I’m a shadow
Yet, in my mind’s eye
I am summer
and translucent

The coffee lover

I am a coffee lover
am quite partial to the bean
But have to say I’m spoilt
by that which comes from my machine
So absolutely gorgeous
is the flavour every day
that instant granules fade
To insignificance I’d say

And when I’m out in town
only specialists will do
For anything not up to scratch
I will these days eschew
But, they say that fortune
always smiles upon the brave
And close to where I live there
are some coffee shops to save

So, although avoiding second best
as inferior won’t do
I’ll always find a coffee
from a bean with the right hue
And when I’m home, no problem
as my tiny red machine
always gives a coffee
that’s best and from the bean

Veronica

We found her in a sale
last year in quite a state
jaded and quite tired
and for planting, somewhat late

But this year our blue Veronica
her beauty to the fore
has grown and spread vivacious
to abundance here once more
