September 30th

The last day of September
summer’s waxed and waned away
yet with warmth still here around me
Autumn’s yet to have its say

There’s still time for shorts and t-shirts
and for sitting in the sun
for though the days are shorter
cooler times have yet to come

So as a child of summer
Autumn days can bide their time
for I’m still happy in the sun
whilst it stays warm and fine

Poetic License

And here I am again
with a pint at Ye Olde Trippe
Waxing lyrical I write
as rain goes ‘drip, drip, drip’
Poetic license there you say
well yes, I quite agree
but as it rhymes I added it
with (I’ll admit) a ‘tee tee hee’

And who’s to say that poets
in this Inn across the years
have not o’er wine and victuals
and merriment and beers
not added similar to their verse
when writing here a ditty
that brings a smile to readers
who find it rather witty?

Pitter Patter

It’s weather for the ducks up here
in Nottingham today
Been raining hard since Sussex
as to here I’ve made my way

And though cats and dogs may feature
it’s the ducks I’ll mention now
as they don’t seem to mind a bit
and enjoy it here somehow

People though? Now here’s the thing
for that’s a different matter
with lots of them complaining
at a little pitter patter

My Chair

There’s a place in my house where I sit
and, if I chose to lose myself I can
Be it with reading or writing
or music or game
Sometimes Obi joins me
as it is for him safe haven
when there is something loud downstairs
My little brown comfort blanket
snuggled up and sleeping
in my chair beside me

Tri-Tanka V (coffee)

Fussy? Yes perhaps
but for me there’s no excuse
for tasteless coffee
made carelessly without soul
Listless, dull and moribund

Especially when out
Cafes, restaurants and pubs
in particular
Coffee from the roasted bean
is all that passes muster

Coffee lover me
An ‘amante del cafe’
Bring me the Java
Especially of a morning
for the day that is ahead

The call of the sea

A beach is a beach
be that where it may
and the sea is always a friend
So I’ll find one
whenever I’m close to a coast
On that you can always depend

For the call of its voice
is something that I
can never ignore for too long
It draws me in close
It embraces my soul
and soothes me with its calming song

Starsun II

Leigh-on-Sea here in Essex
At the end of the day
The sun setting low in the west
Siting with friends
On which one depends
This time of day is the best

Everything’s golden
As the sun sinks down low
And paints a picture for all
And because it’s so good
Simply everyone would
Take a lingering look to enthrall

Like a friend

I went all the way to Liverpool
and sat in Derby Square
Victoria looked down on me
as I was sitting there
On my iPod rather fittingly
the Beatles played a song
about a girl called Eleanor
to which I hummed along
Appropriate to hear that
near to where the song was penned
fifty something years ago
familiar like a friend

Southern England’s voice

At Sea Lane in Goring
breakwaters remain
reaching out to the sea
And this is the Sussex
that speaks loud its voice
and is Southern England to me

Wild with a welcome
the waves breaking there
sparkle and shine in the sun
as my camera it captures
to hold and enrapture
when my frequent visits are done

Mid-September beach days

Mid-September with sun
took me back to the beach
to sit beside the blue sea
It’s lovely down here
sitting still with a beer
There’s no place I’d rather be

It’s a great place to come
and sit in the sun
Though now that it is mid-September
days like this are to treasure
as they come in short measure
for a summer to hold and remember
