Tri-Haiku XXIV (fading sun)

Its autumn apex
takes the sun lower each day
as northwards I face

Summer ends but heat
remains in that strength daily
Save for lesser time

Shadows fall early
So now I must make the most
of a fading sun

Towing the line

I’m sitting in the garden
the sunshine’s nice and warm
Think perhaps I’ll stay a while
‘Cos this is what it’s for

Thought a little earlier
that I might work a while
tidying up the garden
but the sunshine gave a smile

Said that I would rather
sit down and with a beer
chill out and soak up all the rays
whilst I was sitting here

And as I’m not one to argue
when the argument is strong
I sat right down and grabbed a beer
and played there right along

Yorkshire

So I’m back up in West Yorkshire
God’s own country so they say
But my preference is for Sussex
which I prefer ‘most any day

Yes, here there are attractions
unique to Yorkshire and the north
But home’s still where the heart is
when one travels back and forth

So I’ll gladly come for business
or to visit for a while
But take me back to Sussex
as it always brings a smile

Family

On the last day of summer
in the sunshine in Bromley
a barbecue out in the sun
The family together
for the first time in ages
for good conversation and fun

Dogs running for balls
and chasing each other
whilst we sit and chat and relax
It’s something that we
need to often repeat
as it’s good for the soul, that’s a fact

Sea Dancing

To the beach after work
the wind was quite high
and colourful sails
filled up the sky
Kite surfers out there
danced on the sea
skimming the waves
spontaneously
So I sat in the sunshine
and sipped a cool beer
so thankful that I
can simply be here

Stone Henge

No. 12 of 12 in “The Bucket List” series from Jemverse

The oldest on our bucket list
by some margin I’d suggest
So it’s fitting that to Wiltshire
we should some time invest
A place I must be honest
many times when just a boy
I came to with my parents
to explore and to enjoy

But then as we grew older
and its history we consumed
it was added to our bucket list
and the visiting resumed
By then of course the monument
was more protected than the past
and though the stones were out of bounds
we all still had a blast

An early bucket list tick ticked
and regaled to you in rhyme
concluding here the series
with a little snip in time
But our bucket list continues
as more travels are in store
For the world has many places
we would still like to explore

But for now this little series
ends here I’m sad to say
until another bucket list
of places comes your way
Jemverse of course continues
with each day a little rhyme
to capture life in moments
as a snapshot caught in time

Parc Guell

Gaudi continued smashing
bits of china for Parc Guell
in the hills of Barcelona
to which we’ve been as well
It really is quite lovely there
and not one to be missed
if you like us are working
through a growing bucket list

Korcula (aka ‘Korcula revisited’)

10 of 12 in “The Bucket List” series from Jemverse

To Korcula by tender
Inside the city wall
I climbed the tower of St Marks
some thirty metres tall

The view across the rooftops
full of terracotta red
took my breath away, although
the drop filled me with dread

But I made it back down safely
to walk streets of ancient stone
on this island in Croatia
Marco Polo once called home

Lands End

9 of 12 in “The Bucket List” series from Jemverse

A cold day in February
two thousand and seven
when we finally got to Lands End
on the southernmost tip
of the fine Cornish coast
awaiting us just like a friend

John O’Groats signposted
a long way to the north
we’ve yet to get there but here
Its southernmost relation
was waiting to bring
each of us plenty of cheer

Venice (aka ‘Gondolier revisited’)

8 of 12 in “The Bucket List” series from Jemverse

Our gondolier sang songs
as he took us into shade
Cool waters in our gondola
combined with serenade

The ancient walls around us
and narrow waterways
Venetian history spoke to us
on this happiest of days

It was beautiful, exquisite
and we had a moment there
Tears of joy from what we saw
in Venice everywhere
