Place to rhyme

My best words it seems flow freely

when the small hours take a hold

when everything is quiet

and my pen does what it’s told

Relays the words I want to say

about the things I’ve done

about what I am feeling

when I’m happy or I’m glum

Thankfully, I’m pleased to say

the latter’s rare these days

scarce is there the need to

remediate malaise

For as a poet ‘joie de vivre’

is a mantra I live by

as there’s so much to be thankful for

and rarely time to cry

So here in the small hours are

some more words from my pen

which find their way from what I see

around me now and then

And with pleasure that will never wane

each find their place in line

as I formulate the syntax

and find the place to rhyme

Dawn Chorus Joy

I wrote some words without a picture

save the one that’s in my head

so it’s imagination that

you’ll have to use instead

For this is about the chorus

that I hear each day at dawn

the sweetest sound I’ll ever hear

as I awaken with a yawn

A happy throng in harmony

welcoming new day once more

nothing ventured nothing gained

for what it has in store

No, this is at its simplest

joy unabashed you see

which every morning here at dawn

we all can hear for free

Guaranteed to cheer

The yellow of Forsythia

is blooming back and front

as we are fortunate to have

two bushes to be blunt

So no matter where we look

be that to rear or the street

it is yellow there we see

which really is a treat

It is the first to spring to colour

every Springtime every year

and like us I’m sure you will agree

is guaranteed to cheer

Wolfgang came to visit

Wolfgang came to visit

Sat down in the sun

Said with satisfaction

‘This is just why I have come’

He loves it in this garden

It is his home from home

and he really looks a picture

as I hope these words have shown

Wolfgang came to visit

it has been a good long time

and with a bark he told us

that this place for him is fine

He loves that he can run around

and jump and simply be

at home within this garden

where he can run for free

A cracking hacking

36D41E26-CC25-40CA-9A80-C4DF519C57B8

In the garden today
I went wild with the shears
chopping back all the growth
that remained from last year

I chopped and I hacked
with a clip and a prune
as new shoots are forming
for new growth quite soon

Behind me the yellow
Forsythia started
an abundance of colour
from last year departed

So I thought time was right
to get out there and trim
before the Spring starts
with a smile and a grin

And when I had finished
and pondered it sighted
the garden looked great
and I was delighted

Pond Water

There’s a pub in Brighton called ‘The Pond’
closed of course at present
as every pub in England is
which is a bit unpleasant
It serves a pint they brew themselves
‘Pondwater’ – quite sublime
which I will savour once again
quite soon, I trust, sometime

And though the connotation is
contrary I’ll agree
planting in the pond today
reminded me you see
as planting in pond water
new plants new hope to bring
a thought popped in just as they do
that’s worth remembering

Such are these thoughts, these pleasantries
on which our hopes we pin
with expectation promise
from this Covid time we’re in
And emerge we will victorious
when time is right once more
to savour all these pleasures
which we cherish and adore

First cut

I cut the grass
it’s looking good
but then I always
knew it would
It didn’t take
me very long
and just as well
(don’t get me wrong)
for it does not
take very much
to prove that I
still have the touch
But just in case
I could deceive
and so that they
would fair believe
I took a pic
to prove I’d done
and these weren’t
mere words I’d spun

Back to the allotment

Got back to the allotment
armed with strimmers and a plan
spare batteries in the backpack
and refreshments in a can
The grass had taken over but
we kind of guessed it would
not that this would stop us
as with strimmers there we could
remove those months of overgrowth
and flatten it once more
revealing something of the plan
for it we have in store
Next up will be some digging
turning soil to give some room
to plant the things we’ve grown from seed
so we’ll be back here soon

Fine days and sunshine

Sitting in my garden
thinking ‘grass – it needs a trim’
but I’m content to sit here
in the sunspot I am in
and sip an IPA I found
in the cupboard waiting there
for just a moment such as this
I’l say with ‘savour faire’

For moments such as these I live
and it’s really been too long
since I have felt the warmth of sun
and heard the Springtime song
So now there’ll be no stopping me
I’ll be out here all the time
lapping up the sun and all
on days when it is fine

Days

Days I can throw wide abandon
open the window and sing
breathing in deep the fresh morning air
warmed by the sunshine of Spring

Such as these made for enrichment
filling us each with sublime
for spring to the step and joy to the heart
in which we all are entwined
