The big gay gull

In the grounds of our Emmaus

Old Portslade village, Sussex way

stands proud a wooden sculpture

of a seagull tall and gay

The ‘Big Gay Gull’ was built for ‘Pride’

a diverse celebration

in partnership with charities

for summer jubilation

Emotion with endurance stays

as ‘Big Gay Gull’ remains

proud in the lovely sunshine

but also when it rains

Celebrating Brighton’s culture

it’s freedoms’ testament

paying homage to the rainbow

it stays true to its intent

Begging your pardon

The sunshine is glorious

here in the garden

so if you don’t mind

and begging your pardon

I’ll just sit me down

right here and right now

and turn my nose skyward

for the warmth on my brow

I’ll not be here long

but it’s really quite rude

not to sit here a while

and never intrude

when the sunshine is high

and it’s lovely like this

which for black dogs like me

is quite close to bliss

Freedom II

Seagull giving it ‘some of that’

on ‘Fatto Mano’s’ there

whilst we walked slow through Brighton

the afternoon to share

Rock buns in Pavilion Gardens

charity shops galore

cheap CDs in the pound shop

and we’re back here once more

The sunshine made the people

and the ambiance so real

almost like a living thing

at fingertips to feel

It’s been a long time coming

but we embraced it here today

tangible this freedom feeling

and this time it’s here to stay

Repurposed Llama

Repurposed my lighty-up llama

as his battery gave up the ghost

and as he needed to have a purpose in life

I made him a spider plant host

So now he stands proud in the garden

but instead of glowing at night

instead he will proudly grow spiders

and look his best in the light

Blessed and content

It doesn’t take much

in fact not much at all

to make something feel

quite so wonderful

So out here in the sun

I am blessed and content

summed up in a moment

and every word meant

Pleasant enough

It’s pleasant enough

sitting out in the sun

with a dog at my side

and a pen on the run

Capturing words

here in full flow

from the mind of a poet

to the pages below

It’s pleasant enough

when a morning is warm

and the joys of the Spring

are becoming the norm

Forming the syntax

of something that is

a moment of pleasure

and seems right for this

The Plan (part III)

I’ve carried the frames

one by one down the the road

as they were quite awkward

so, to lessen the load

I decided four hikes

was better than two

to get the frames there

well you would, wouldn’t you?

So now the plan gets

at last to part three

a no-dig solution

for Sally and me

Next will be cardboard

laid over the grass

followed by compost

‘cos digging’s a farce

And then all the plants

from small seeds we’ve sewn

and coaxed to fruition

in the sunlight at home

we can plant in our frames

and watch them all grow

as the Spring turns to Summer

and the frosty times go

By and by then part four

of this saga I’ll write

when the next chapter’s down

with fruition in sight

Then I hope that the picture

shows results in the making

with reward to us both

for the pains we are taking

Shiny II

I’m in the garden, it’s shiny

and growing right there

two dandelions in

the bright sunshine glare

So, as they’re yellow and lovely

and doing no harm

I trimmed the grass round them

so as not to alarm

And sitting here now

with a beer at my side

the shiny world smiles

and my grin is quite wide

There’s an ambiance softened

by the warmth of the breeze

with the sound of the birds

up there in the trees

So with sunshine around me

I’m happy to stay

right here in my garden

on this fine Springtime day

Bring it on

It’s really taken hold of things

with new growth there abundant

and the garden’s looking lovely

now that winter is redundant

They’ve even gone so far to say

and promise us it seems

that for the next few days we’ll bask

in warmth from bright sunbeams

So bring it on I shout aloud

the timing here’s sublime

as I am on a weeks’ long leave

for well-earned leisure time

Taking me time

It’s midweek and I’m on holiday

and enjoying every day

as rest-respite is needed

now and then from the foray

Five days to think of nothing else

but enjoyment just for me

doing stuff I love to do

most of it here for free

And this rest and relaxation

is so cathartic that I find

it’s easy to switch off from work

and totally unwind

So here’s to having holidays

doesn’t matter what you do

as the important thing is having fun

and taking time for you
