Heard them first a-honking, a crescendo from the West
before the 'V' right overhead, formation at its best
A goose display of perfect flight for us there in the field
as we walked Obi in the rain deep in the Sussex Weald
And it was quite magnificent, it made us laugh aloud
full of the joie de vivre that sings and make the heart feel proud
There in the silence a single leaf fell
slowly down to the ground
from the tree it had lived on throughout the year
with the slightest whisper of sound
Yet no sadness here, no falling from grace
but exuberant moment of glee
as a new golden treasure shone bright at its best
at the end of its life radiantly
I'm curled in a circle in my little bed
on the floor in the room where I rest my head
when I'm not barking or running instead
as mostly I need a good nap
I'm curled and I'm comfy and that's a no-brainer
as with anything else I'd be quite the complainer
for comfortable snoozes I'm a canine campaigner
as mostly I need a good nap
Had a weekend of days enlongated to fit
five of the then actually, welcome to whit
which I'd planned for myself thinking of it
as a rest is needed sometimes
Planned nothing save being the best of me
five days to do little but lounge and be free
which all of you workers will know and agree
as a rest is needed sometimes
I've had several of the 'one' days
to see me right this year
the 'Elbow' sense of wonder
for a dose of joy and cheer
But this morning throwing wide
the curtains in my room
the autumn sunshine out there
made it feel like it was June
So I had an 'Elbow' moment
and put it into play
seized and used to fulness
throughout this perfect day
[The ‘Elbow moment’ referred to here is inspired by the lyrics from their ‘One day like this’ song featuring on their 2008 album ‘The Seldom seen Kid’. “So throw those curtains wide, one day like this a year would see me right”]
For some it might seem strange to sit in a pub alone
especially in London when I'm several miles from home
but overhearing conversation, snippets caught as people chat
is a pleasant way to pass the time when with a pint in fact
Not eavesdropping quite per se, just sitting passing time
the odd word there, the jollity, the laughs, the voice sublime
All part of this , the joie de vivre, the 'je ne sais quoi', the flair
that adds to raison d'être by simply sitting there
Sitting in a London pub
waiting with a jar
seemed the right thing there to do
the meeting place not far
Carnaby Street and Kingly Court
around the corner there
where in a bit I'll wander
a lovely meal to share
Two offspring London working
and me here for the week
so meeting up one evening
a no-brainer so to speak
But I got here quite early
so I'm killing time a while
with a London tipple
and a poem for a smile
October shadow, Obi's field
in the heart of Sussex Weald
barely was the warmth concealed
in the autumn now
Walked a mile around the place
felt again familiar grace
with the sunshine on my face
in the autumn now
Obi ran, he always does
round in circles there because
this is how he gets his buzz
in the autumn now
Spent up there our usual hour
underneath the oaken bower
turning trees above us tower
in the autumn now
Across the way St James' Tower
its clock face in the sun
as morning breaks in London
and the night time is all done
There's promise in that glow
of a lovely day to come
the sky already cloudless blue
the rain there quick to shun
So I will hasten out there
for some walking for a while
here in central London
in the Parliamentary Mile
Walking back through London
from a film at Leicester Square
the crowds now long dispersed
saw Nelson's Column there
Bright against the night time sky
achievement set in stone
I pondered it a while
on my way to home from home
Temporary for a week
the hotel serves me well
whilst in the heart of Westminster
with more tales yet to to tell
...all about me and my life in words. I write most days, carrying an ideas book around in which I capture a word snapshot of life around me. So there's a lot here about Sussex and the sea and anything else I see that inspires.
The pictures are mine too. Some taken to match a poem; some poems written to match a pic; others chosen because they work well with words written.
Jemverse is life in words. Hope you enjoy the reading as much as I enjoy the writing...
