Who’s smirking?

So what did he do
on the beach when not working?
the question was asked
with appropriate smirking
Apt one would say
with no conviction of doubt
when all of the story of
the truth it gets out

For not very much would
sum most of it up
that and much beer
sipped oft from his cup
A looking of eye to
the sea view out there
with a nod to the gulls
who just didn’t care

A snooze in the sun
forty winks and some more
with no one around to
hear the loud snore
Then a walk on the shingle
to find a hagstone
which he’s put on display
when he got them home

Yes it’s true to say
that his time on the beach
is not a lesson the
virtuous teach
Yet for one of his age
(more than sixty years seen)
it’s what one would expect
if that beach you had seen

For it exudes a ‘something’
which encourages rest
and however you spend it
it’s always the best
So now, truth be told
on the beach when not working
he had the best time
so who’s the one smirking?

On the beach II

10 of 10 in the Jemverse ‘On the beach’ series

The sprawl of Brighton to the east
and Worthing to the west
is why this beach at Lancing
sparks such an interest
As lying equidistant
the eye is drawn to each
affording quite the best of views
when sitting on the beach

Just a short walk from Shoreham
(even quicker in the car)
it’s a perfect beach to come to
as it’s really not that far
Yet despite that clear attraction
‘tho folk this way still come
it’s never all that crowded
even in the summer sun

But here in late September
there is more here to condone
as I am here for hours
and quite often on my own
I might see a paddle board
or fishing boat out there
but it’s mostly me and seagulls
this beach to love and share

Sometimes a dog walker
will slowly amble by
mostly in the mornings
before the sun is high
And as they pass the beach hut
we’ll exchange a word or two
as the dogs around us frolic
like dogs on beaches do

And other times kite surfers
when the wind is blowing strong
will fill the sky with colour
as they skim and surf along
They are indeed a spectacle
and privilege to see
on this beach in Lancing
where we just love to be

This beach it is my haven
and this hut my special place
somewhere to escape to
when I need a saving grace
Epitomising everything
I love about the sea
and somewhere I’ll return to
on the beach where I am free

Twenty year view

3 of 10 in the Jemverse ‘On the beach’ series

For over twenty years
I have sat and watched this view
back since I was forty when
this vista was brand new
Hut one-o-one at Lancing
on the east side of the beach
about three miles from where we live
so still in easy reach

And even after twenty years
this view down to the sea
exudes its charm and here remains
quite unequivocally
A place where I am quite at ease
and in my element
for it is where for all these years
my summers I have spent

Things to do on hot days III

And yes there is the beach hut
turquiose, waiting by the sea
a favourite and always
where we’d really like to be
For here the air is tranquil
and the view it is sublime
full bodied and resplendent
like a really good fine wine

Something here to savour
and breathe in and just enjoy
for it’s freedom in in the making
in our gift here to employ
A privilege not lost on us
so you can be quite sure
that we all make the most of it
always coming back for more

Within Easy Reach

There’s a cool autumn breeze
but it’s warm in the sun
So I’ve made my way back
to ‘One hundred and one’

Our beach hut haven
here on the beach
on my way home
and within easy reach

And yes I know that I’ve used
that very same line
many times over but
why not, ‘cos it rhymes?

And it captures familiar
for this place by the sea
when at all times of year
we can quite simply be

With Grace

Mine’s the only beach hut open
yet the sun is shining bright
The beach is quite resplendent
but there’s no one else in sight

Just me, the sea and seagulls
down there on the shore
The gentle sound of gentle waves
How could I ask for more?

So I am truly grateful
for safe haven in this place
For with it comes a joie de vivre
given free with grace

Mostly Cloudy

Came down to the beach hut
It was overcast today
But it was still cathartic
looking out to seas of grey

The temperature was balmy
and there was a little blue
So the sunshine would be coming
on a promise, this I knew

Behind my windbreak I was sheltered
from the stiff breeze to the west
Spending several hours
in the place I love the best

Shadow Wave

Shadow cast on turquoise
I raised a hand and waved
One finger on the shutter
for the photo that I saved

The sunshine played, it always does
on summer evenings here
The beach hut looking lovely
with the sunset drawing near

Mr Brown and the bees

Mr Brown (not his name)
just a name that we gave
has a hive in his hut
which he’s trying to save
A man with a pole
and a spray and a hat
came and prodded about
and it seemed that was that

But the bees were quite savvy
and wise to the plot
as this seemed a nice place
and they liked this fine spot
So they didn’t play ball
just buzzed all around
And Mr Brown and his friend
weren’t pleased with the sound

Yet they made best of it
and after a while
were doing a dance
on the beach for a smile
The bees they joined in
and because of the heat
Mr Brown and his friend
made a hasty retreat

The bees then went back
to their hive in the hut
and settled right down
when the door it was shut
Mr Brown and his friend
with the pole and the hat
jumped up and down
with annoyance at that

No doubt they be back
with a box and some gloves
to find a new home
for the bees they will love
But for now the last word
with a sting in the tail
is held by the bees
and me here to regale

I didn’t get a pic of Mr Brown’s dance with the bees as I was (at the time) bent over double with laughter. So here’s a pic of the Lancing beach green huts where this story is based. Photo – Jempics

My Place

Can I just say, yes one more time
‘This is my favourite place’
As you’ll not find me here
without a smile upon my face

The sea, the beach, the beauty
outside beach hut one o one
Here in lovely Sussex
in the summer and the sun
