Perfect II

Mock Orange and the bumblebees
buzzing in the sun
spreading fragrance in the garden
now the summertime is come

The deepest blue of sky above
the wisp of clouds, the breeze
warm and gentle on my brow
and cool upon my knees

Contentment a prerequisite
quite impossible to be
in this place without it
perfection here for me

So here I sit and contemplate
and breathe the fragrance there
soaking up the sunshine
that this garden has to share

Blessed and content

It doesn’t take much

in fact not much at all

to make something feel

quite so wonderful

So out here in the sun

I am blessed and content

summed up in a moment

and every word meant

Four flights of steps between

Three rooms, four flights of steps divide
my life these days its seems
and one might question why and what
that self-containment means

But I am not perturbed by it
and not imprisoned I
No captive here, no punishment
I happily get by

For this is life in lockdown
but I am quite content
as I know it’s not forever
so I also have intent

That when all this is over
I’ll be out there every day
and, not confined to shielding
live it in every way

Til then though these three rooms
with four flights of steps between
will stay for my contentment
for I know just what they mean

Music days III

I sat and listened to music as the day bled away
a can of beer at my side
and closing my eyes
it was no surprise
I felt joy with those songs as I cried

For my music will do that and make no mistake
it’s something that I often do
Drift away for a while
with contentment and smile
a pastime I’ll often pursue

For je ne sais quoi moments

I stood still in the meadow with winter around me
a hand raised there to the sun
My shadow still long
tho’ now bright my song
with a feeling that Spring had begun

It was a je ne sais quoi in that moment I felt
a fleeting moment in time
But the promise was there
quite willing to share
and unique as it was wholly mine

This field we walk

This field we walk
our saving grace
and for result
we love this place
Changing as
the year goes by
and different things
each time we spy
The joy of seeing
running paws
and flapping ears
to much applauds

And safety too
for here we three
are absolutely
people free
An hour of freedom
walking here
enough to give
us weekly cheer
So really what
more could we crave
when we have this
our joy to save

For it is that
in spades and more
a place we’ve both
come to adore
And Obi too
for this is his
a field to run in
doggy bliss
This field we walk
our saving grace
our hearts are here
within this place

For the bringing of joy

A song which brings a tingle
Grayson Perry on TV
two little things in life
which bring joie de vivre to me

Something coloured yellow
Yaki Udon, ginger spice
A really lovely beer
Marmite crisps (they’re very nice)

My little dog called Obi
my wife and children too
Walking in the country
which I often like to do

The beach and sea in Sussex
I have know since just a boy
Our beach hut down at Lancing
all these things will bring me joy

And the bringing of that joy
is a part of life that I
could never really do without
and need it to get by

That joie de vivre, the spark of life
dare I say ‘raison d’être’?
A quintessential part of me
in French, the word ‘soumettre’

An expression of God’s goodness
deep rooted, simple, free
this peace of mind, this happiness
the joy that’s brought to me

Simple Things

It’s been said before
It’ll be said again
but there’s no harm repeating
the oft sung refrain
that moments of bliss
when contentment’s complete
can be captured and held
to make life this sweet

They are unquantifiable
no mark and no measure
no yardstick or benchmark
for this simple pleasure
And of what do I speak
in these words written here?
The enjoyment of course
from a chat and a beer

Serendipity

I found myself writing
About somewhere I’d been
And all of the wonderful
Things there I’d seen
The joy and the richness
Of life beyond measure
Captured and held just
Like having treasure
It was special and wholesome
With comfort and ease
To serve as assurance
Unrest to appease
So I drifted away for
A moment to where
I knew that contentment
With pleasure to share
And held on to the wisdom
From this memory
For a moment akin
To serendipity

Beach and happy

The beach, yes I know
I have written before
and will again, I am certain of that
For when I am here
my heart’s full of cheer
and sees happiness here as a fact

For this is contentment
and solace and more
It’s my haven, my favourite place
And if you were here
you’d see that from the cheer
that is written all over my face
