Jab

Got the text on Monday morning
best news I have had
as today in just a little while
I’ll have had the job
And yes, we’ll still be careful
but if you need a thing
to put a smile upon your face
and give you cause to sing
Then this is up there at the top
of all the things to give
Something truly wonderful
allowing all to live

Beginning III

3 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 months IV’ series

Two more months of ‘twenty’
and what a year it’s been
one that took us by surprise
the strangest one we’ve seen
Yes, I know it’s not yet over
and I’m not wishing time away
but now it is November
thought I ought to have my say
We have been through thick and thin
and though summer was sublime
the arrival of the virus
has brought a darker time

Now the winter is upon us
but insidious it stays
no antidote we yet have found
to combat this malaise
And yet this world has genius
so I’m absolutely sure
that it will not be very long
before we have a cure
That said though, this pandemic
has changed things for the good
so when it’s finally over
I hope that’s understood

And we do not return to
the world which we once had
one completely selfish
and bordering on the bad
But one which looks to kindness
and the better things which will
with just a little thought
an equanimity instil
So with first of November
as the last two months remain
let’s all rise to that challenge
and to that hope lay claim

Too good to miss

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained”
the ancient proverb word
so we put best foot forward
and proceeded undeterred
Maintaining social distance
for our safety guaranteed
we met for conversation
with an appetite to feed

A meeting up of family
apart for far too long
this little slice of happiness
to fill our hearts with song
And, as long as we are careful
we will see some more of this
rekindling of a friendship
which is far too good to miss

Too soon?

It’s been nine weeks but now there’s talk
of lifting the restriction
Not sure how I feel ’bout that
given my conviction
that back when all this started
we were in for the long haul
and resolute I stayed inside
til we overcame it all

Still not sure that time has come
so with my profile I’ll stay low
and until I’m really positive
I’ll keep it nice and slow
For I’ve no doubt that by and by
the day will come when we
can make a reappearance
and be safe and virus free

Simple II

I don’t ask for much in life
I’m quite a simple chap
Just music and some lavender
will content me, that’s a fact
So enforcing isolation
when we all must stay at home
doesn’t really bother me
and I’ll not gripe and moan

I’ve books that I can read again
and pens and lots of paper
for recording this adventure
with words about the caper
I’ve music I’ve not listened to
for quite a long time now
Forgotten on the shelf right there
and overlooked somehow

So these things I will rejuvenate
and enjoy them all once more
as whilst things remain uncertain
no-one knows what lies in store
We may find we will need to stay
at home for quite some time
But with all these pleasures waiting
that is absolutely fine

[Written at the end of March 2020 when, in an attempt to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, UK citizens had been asked to stay at home, ‘social distance’ themselves and not go out unless absolutely needed].

Tri-haiku XXVII (sunshine)

In these troubled days
with my movement restricted
by Covid-19

I am resolute
that the sunshine will remain
and bring fortitude

It is my saving
Ever precious and constant
A true friend indeed
