An ode to Autumn

4 of 4

Pale-white shrinking golden glow
hovers over water slow
and morning waking slumber stays
as it peers slowly from the haze
Whimsy holds removed I see
a world at distance wistfully
as summer fades to distant glow
and cooler days I soon will know
A curtain call as evening falls
and summer into winter calls
Yet tangible with treasure hold
the Autumn swan-song bathed in gold

Welcoming the gold

There’s a nip in the air
but the door’s open wide
and I’ve yet to feel chill
when sitting inside

There’s still colour out there
and the green’s yet to fade
as though it was hoping
that summer had stayed

But there’s no denying
the autumn’s now here
So I’ll welcome the gold
with gusto and cheer

Of rust and gold

And to these days
when all I hold
is flecked with rust
or painted gold
I know which of
these I prefer
So to the gold
I will defer

The rust it takes
a second place
Resting with
its fall from grace
Yet not forgotten
all these things
as each have given
cause to sing

Rust can be changed
Re-vigour gleaned
to witness gold
with surface cleaned
So of the gold
and of the rust
to each I cling
as each I trust

Aspects of Gold III

Part 3 of 3

Of the sunsets I’ve seen
these aspects of gold
are treasures to cherish
and assets to hold
For each is a promise
to capture and seize
from the sun in the sky
like a kiss on the breeze

Aspects of Gold II

Part 2 of 3

On the footbridge returning
from a day on the beach
there’s a place where I stand
that’s within easy reach
to envelop myself
in the colours I see
and gaze out in wonder
as it falls around me

For here there are moments
to capture and hold
as each sunset settles
to aspects of gold

Into Gold

4 of 16 in the Jemverse ‘Venetian Vistas’ series

We sailed into the sunset
quite literally into gold
Leaving Bar behind us
to Korcula’s island old
The sky turned red around us
The sun sank to the sea
as into arms of gold we leapt
quite romantically

There was gold…

There was gold on the horizon
Out there across the sea
As we drove back into Shoreham
My soulmate, Sal and me
It filled the sky above us
With clouds tinged pink and bright
Heralding a promise
As we’re told to bring delight

There was gold on the horizon
As the sun bid us adieu
But it will be back tomorrow
When morning comes anew

Evening Gold

Silhouetted here in contrast
against an azure sky
Like giant insects waiting
cranes in silent protest lie
And glorious behind them
behind the Western hills
The sun sets o’er the city
and everything is still
This tranquil ending of a day
when all is painted gold
exudes a warmth, a calming
as the evening takes a hold

Treasure to save

Autumn’s come early it seems as the Spring
was quite wet this year and then
the summer that followed was generally dry
and hot most days once again

It’s only September and summer remains
with sunshine that’s warm every day
But there’s gold in the trees which is lovely to see
and paints a good picture I’d say

For now though I’m hoping the sunshine remains
extending the summer we’ve seen
With gold in the trees adding treasure to save
to the riches replacing the green

Remnant of Summer

On the breath of a morning
I caught in the air
a lingering fragrance
subtle and rare
A remnant of summer
to cherish and hold
and remain with me as
the autumn turns gold
