10 of 10 in the Jemverse ‘On the beach’ series

The sprawl of Brighton to the east
and Worthing to the west
is why this beach at Lancing
sparks such an interest
As lying equidistant
the eye is drawn to each
affording quite the best of views
when sitting on the beach
Just a short walk from Shoreham
(even quicker in the car)
it’s a perfect beach to come to
as it’s really not that far
Yet despite that clear attraction
‘tho folk this way still come
it’s never all that crowded
even in the summer sun
But here in late September
there is more here to condone
as I am here for hours
and quite often on my own
I might see a paddle board
or fishing boat out there
but it’s mostly me and seagulls
this beach to love and share
Sometimes a dog walker
will slowly amble by
mostly in the mornings
before the sun is high
And as they pass the beach hut
we’ll exchange a word or two
as the dogs around us frolic
like dogs on beaches do
And other times kite surfers
when the wind is blowing strong
will fill the sky with colour
as they skim and surf along
They are indeed a spectacle
and privilege to see
on this beach in Lancing
where we just love to be
This beach it is my haven
and this hut my special place
somewhere to escape to
when I need a saving grace
Epitomising everything
I love about the sea
and somewhere I’ll return to
on the beach where I am free

And yes there is the beach hut
turquiose, waiting by the sea
a favourite and always
where we’d really like to be
For here the air is tranquil
and the view it is sublime
full bodied and resplendent
like a really good fine wine
Something here to savour
and breathe in and just enjoy
for it’s freedom in in the making
in our gift here to employ
A privilege not lost on us
so you can be quite sure
that we all make the most of it
always coming back for more

A stone’s throw from the hillside
and a stone’s throw from the beach
Gosh! I am a lucky fellow
to have this in easy reach
And what’s more I have a river
from the sea into the hills
so if I tire of either
I have that to bring the thrills
This really is a lovely place
this Shoreham by the sea
and there’s no other haven
where I think I’d rather be

To the east the seven sisters
to the west the Isle of Wight
around this sweeping Sussex bay
I have within my sight
And in front of me out to the south
the diamond glinting sea
reflecting southern sunshine
is with me here and free
So no wonder that from time to time
I’ll come and sit and gaze
on Lancing beach for hours
at the ever moving waves
For this is as close to heaven
I can be I’d safely say
here in my perfect haven
on this Sussex coastal bay

There’s a cool autumn breeze
but it’s warm in the sun
So I’ve made my way back
to ‘One hundred and one’
Our beach hut haven
here on the beach
on my way home
and within easy reach
And yes I know that I’ve used
that very same line
many times over but
why not, ‘cos it rhymes?
And it captures familiar
for this place by the sea
when at all times of year
we can quite simply be

There’s a word I feel from way up here
One born of peace and more
‘Serenity’s’ more apt I think
up on the nineteenth floor
I’m high above the London streets
its noise remains below
And I am free to sit and gaze
in peace and quiet you know
And though the steel and concrete
cannot replace the green
It still provides a haven
when to the city I have been

Stretching to infinity
Beach huts on Beach Green
Painted many colours
Brightest you’ll have seen
Here on the coast in Sussex
a haven on the beach
A little bit of paradise
there in easy reach
And don’t they just look gorgeous
Their colours bright on show
Quintessentially English
all there in a row

I love our little garden
and the space we have out here
It’s lovely in the summer
and at other times of year
And yes, it’s on the small side
but that’s the way it is
So we’re not that bothered by it
as there’s nothing here remiss
It’s actually quite helpful
as to keep this lovely view
it’s easier to keep in check
and less for us to do
And even though the shrubbery
can overwhelm sometimes
A quick trim with the shears
makes room for more sunshine
It’s lovely sitting out here
so we do whenever we
have time to sit and have a read
or sip a cup of tea
Or simply sit and just admire
for which I beg your pardon
As it really is just perfect here
in this our little garden

I sat down at my beach hut
with white horses at low tide
The kites were out there surfing
in the blue sea vast and wide
And the breeze though fairly brisk
was blowing from the south
bringing a fresh saltiness
I could taste within my mouth
The waves were making constant sound
as they lapped upon the shore
And I sat and smiled and thought that I
could not wish nor hope for more
This is a haven paradise
wonderful at any time
But especially on days like this
when the weather is so fine

Opened up the beach hut
which needs a lick of paint
But it’s still a lovely place to be
All ours and very quaint
We used to paint it ‘beach-hut white’
by regulation every year
But now the rules have been relaxed
and colour has appeared
It won’t take long, I’m sure of that
and in the August sun
We’ll spend some time with cans of paint
until the job is done
Yellow’s nice and so is green
but with ocean in plain sight
a blue reflecting sea and sky
is justified and right
It remains a lovely place to come
and with some work and TLC
We’ll keep our beach hut spick and span
in our haven by the sea
