Melting Days

The mercury climbed to forty
for the hottest we had seen
records broken everywhere
from what they once had been
and everybody moaned
as no infrastructure here
to cope with extreme weather
when the high is in the clear
Ice-cream sales and paddling pools
brought respite here to some
but most of us just melted
in this gorgeous summer sun

90 and rising

The temperature crept above ninety
so I thought 'that's enough for today'
and, grabbing a go-bag ready to go
to the beach again, made my own way

The breeze from the sea was most welcome
but it was still in the eighties down there
Though as this wasn't work and I had a cold beer
I wasn't too minded to care

Hot III

I thought I’d write a poem
but my pen was really hot
I’d left it out in sunshine
so the poem it was not
At least for just a while
til the pen it had cooled down
then I could write the words
on this page without a frown

Heatwave

A heatwave in April?
Don’t mind if I do
Well, you would if it’s offered
and free, wouldn’t you?
So here’s to the sunshine
and long may it stay
at least throughout April
and well into May

Seville

We thought it was hot in Lisbon
but when we got to Seville
the mercury was climbing
above thirty-eight until
it peaked up there at thirty-nine
as we wilted on the street
and if it wasn’t for the water sprays
we’d have melted in the heat

But that aside, the city was
breathtaking in extreme
Amongst the most amazing
that in Spain so far we’ve seen

Lisbon 36

It was thirty six in Lisbon
when we climbed up to St Jorge
An eleventh century castle
built by Moors above the gorge

But it was cool beneath the olive trees
inside the castle walls
taking pictures of the things we saw
and marvelling at it all

The view was simply stunning
the Tejo river to the fore
the orange roofs of houses
churches, ruins and much more

Then later on we found a lift
which reduced much of the climb
Took us quickly to the town
for longer shopping time

Lisbon was immensely hot
but beautiful as well
Another place we really loved
these words will always tell

Summer for a day

Yesterday the sunshine brought
us out in summer gear
Yet today it’s pouring down with rain
and is chill again, I fear
Still – I’m really not complaining
for yesterday was worth a lot
as it served as a reminder
of what it’s like when it is hot

We were outside in the garden
on our loungers lying down
with the fragrance of the grass I’d cut
as our pale skin turned to brown
It was summer for a little while
and it caused us to reflect
that now it’s May it’s likely
that much more we can expect

When it’s hot, I am

I am part of the sunshine
It’s warmth lifts my soul
It revitalises and
with it I’m whole

I am part of the summer
Long days in the sun
with lavender lingering
when they are done

I am part of the essence
that winter is not
As I’m only myself
when it’s lovely and hot

Hot II

It’s rather hot
again today
upper thirties
(so some say)
Doesn’t really
bother me
as I’ll be swimming
in the sea
I love it when
it’s hot like this
as this to me
is perfect bliss
I am within
my element
when long days in
the sun are spent
Hot and humid
suits me fine
as I love it in
the bright sunshine

Fabulous

Fabulous day
sun shining bright
Clear blue skies
no cloud in sight
Cooling breeze
born of the sea
Sussex today is
the place to be
Temperature rising
heat haze there
Sandals on feet
arms are bare
The river is blue
The fields are green
Best day so far
this year I’ve seen
