I've probably said it and written it down
in a poem I've crafted before
Repetition aside though, I'll say it again
as this is what writing is for
A message in words with a syntax to flow
off the tongue as one reads it aloud
which as poet and wordsmith fills me with a joy
of which (I might add) I am proud
For if by that measure the message I bring
is revealed and remembered and lived
my purpose as poet to fruition is come
delivered to you by this gift
And freely that's given, I've no restraint there
as my role is custodian here
for the words that I craft to verse which I leave
has one purpose - to bring you good cheer
A new pen in my poet's hand
always brings a joy
something it has always done
since I was just a boy
It's all about the tactile
and the way the ink just flows
that makes me want to write and
see how to the page it goes
In my solace and respite
with the sun streaming in
I'm at home in my room
as you'll see from my grin
for all that is in here
is here to bring joy
with things I've collected
since I was a boy
It's here that I write
and here that I play
be it music or games
sitting here day by day
It brings 'joie de vivre'
my raison d'être
for all inspiration
in life that I share
A Woozle went a-running
in a field in the sun
his ears pointing upright
as he galloped on the run
Thunderpaws by nature
they were thundering today
as he ran around in circles
with a 'hip hip hip hooray'
For this was joy unbridled
unfettered running free
expressed there in his features
with a dog smile full of glee
Through a gap in the bushes
I spied Shoreham town
nestled there under the Downs
twixt me and the sea
safe there in the lea
the bearer of treasure and crowns
And I smiled in the knowledge
that this was my home
the place I am so pleased to live
for it has everything
to make my heart sing
with the riches it serves there to give
These chalky trails on Sussex loam
in these green hills above my home
are quite the best so many times
I will return as they are mine
and with a joy I'll shout aloud
this is my Sussex and I'm proud
Though many bands we've seen
it's been six years since last we all
were collectively 'the gigsters'
at least, as I recall
But last night for Divine Comedy
the 'Gigsters' were united
once again all six together
as each had been invited
'Divine' was most appropriate
as superlative this evening
the 'Gigsters' doing what we do
for friendship's steadfast meaning
In the loft I found boxes of music forgotten
CDs boxed ages ago
Downloaded to iPods listened to then
when I was much younger you know
So the discovery now of these treasures is such
that I'm smitten all over again
the i-Pods replaced with the streaming of now
these are so much like an old friend
And though there's surely suspect content in there
as my taste has changed over time
the joy of the challenge to listen again
is something that is wholly mine
Something different every time
in this familiar place
visited most weekends
as it's our saving grace
Obi gets his running time
as we follow, slower gait
and every time throughout the year
new pleasures there await
Something different every time
some small, some larger still
await us when we visit
our abundance to refill
I built a Millennium Falcon
something I have longed to do
sixteen hundred pieces of Lego
from an intricate guide someone drew
It took me several long hours
but the resulting model of joy
is a beauty to simply behold and admire
by the man who's still really a boy
...all about me and my life in words. I write most days, carrying an ideas book around in which I capture a word snapshot of life around me. So there's a lot here about Sussex and the sea and anything else I see that inspires.
The pictures are mine too. Some taken to match a poem; some poems written to match a pic; others chosen because they work well with words written.
Jemverse is life in words. Hope you enjoy the reading as much as I enjoy the writing...
