This time of year with pen in hand I'll sit down in my garden and as sunshine warms and shines and does what in July it will because this is summer, so will I sit down and watch as time goes by and words may come. they often do reflecting on a whim eschewed crafted from a poet's mind inspired here by the sun I find

Some weeks you just need one to recharge your soul for relaxation and rest and to get you back whole For when you keep going bits drop off and fall and though gradual a process you're not quite your all So sometimes a recharge is the right call to make to top up the batteries with respite to take and you know it makes sense and is no fake or sham as the evidence there is the whole you, I am

Photo – Gracey Croucher of Emily Rose Croucher in the woods. I chose this one to accompany my words as it sums up to me what ‘free spirit’ and the ‘I am’ is all about. Sometimes it’s good to simply have ‘me’ time.

I know what I am
and I’m comfortable with it
Yes I have regrets
but they’ll not make me fidget
For I am just me
and you get what you get
so it’s probably best
to accept and not fret
And I hope when you find
what being me means
you’ll discover the truth
all’s not what it seems
For in us are hidden
some admirable things
which come to the fore
when life at us sings
And the truth of the wholesome
shines over all
when each of us sees
what life’s really for

This circular green
Grown, cut back, abundant now
as summer takes hold
This circular green
A comfort true and fragrant
These summer senses
This circular green
With me, part of me, in me
I am in summer

It’s much better down here today
the sun is with me and, hey
though the South-Westerly is still pretty strong
it’s blowing me home all the way
There are lots more kite-surfers out
but still almost no-one about
and though there’s a breeze it’s very warm still
so you’d still get a tan without doubt
There’s blue in the sky out to sea
and, in shelter, it’s most definitely
an afternoon to be out in the sun
just the beach and the ocean and me

Show me a colour, one that describes me
Look at my face – the colour behind my eyes
It cries for the sun and pines away on these rainy days
Curled in a ball and shivering,
It longs for a blue that paints the skies
I have a paintbox here somewhere; it has a bright palette
One I have used many times, mixing over and over
as old and dusty colours
lend their way to young ones bright and new
Blending easily with the marks I have made
There’s one hiding there with a hint of something interesting
I think it’s the one you need; something of the extra mile
Like the spreading rings of raindrops
as they fall to puddles
But there again, perhaps I am imagining things
Come closer. I’ll show you a colour – one that describes me.
Is it blue or a yellow or an autumn gold? Is it mellow green
or amber, or purple or silver or any one of the
hundred thousand colours you have seen? No. It is every one of these
spreading like raindrop rings on water

Tidal waters splashing
at the waters’ edge
on the old breakwater
such a privilege
Buried deep in shingle
but still within my reach
as the tide turns one more time
down here at the beach

There are the special places
each of us must find
where we can go to be alone
find peace and just unwind
The places of tranquility
where we can simply breathe
watch quietly as the world goes by
before it’s time to leave
I have several such places
and it’s important that I do
Each of them are precious
as I’d imagine yours are too
Sometimes there’ll be music
but mostly there’s just me
Sitting quietly with a smile
in a place I love to be

I am part of the sunshine
It’s warmth lifts my soul
It revitalises and
with it I’m whole
I am part of the summer
Long days in the sun
with lavender lingering
when they are done
I am part of the essence
that winter is not
As I’m only myself
when it’s lovely and hot
