Beginning V

5 of 12 in the Jemverse series ’12 months IV’

To the New Year a promise
here made to ones self
to remain true to form
and with all of my wealth
to capture from life
one day at a time
its essence in words
and transpose to line
Resolution here made
with every intention
to keep and to hold
and daily to mention
for these are my words
and this is my gift
from a poet to you
your spirits to lift
So with new beginning
I’ll start with intent
for here is a promise
wholeheartedly meant

First V

5 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 months III’ series

A first in many ways today
a new decade for one
Twenty-twenty makes a start
now twenty-teens are done
First of the year and of the month
First poem of the year
and of the decade, come to that
(This much to me is clear)
So here’s a little ditty
the first of more to come
from January through December
until this year is done

White

In white there’s essence of the new
January starts the year afresh
As we from hibernation
awaken from our winter rest

In white there’s hope and promise
Galanthus for a New Year’s day
Echoed in these few short lines
Capture all I have to say

In white there’s inspiration
Clarity gives birth to new
And so with hope we gather here
Repetition to eschew

January

No. 5 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 Months II’ series

Galanthus greets this New Year’s day
Snowdrop heads due reverence show
and as a new sun rises
sleep heads all come to know
That here is opportunity
A promise waiting in the wings
heralding the new, a first
Tugging at those old heartstrings

Galanthus (aka ‘Snowdrop’) synonymous with ‘hope’, is the January birth flower.

Twelve months one

No. 6 of 12 in the Jemverse ‘Twelve Months’ series

Delicate, I bow my head
To the first day of the year
And give to it my blessing
For happiness and cheer

Twenty eighteen, here at last
January one
I bring a snowdrop promise
To the year that’s just begun

For I have heart and I have hope
This year throughout will bring
Things that bring a smile
And give you cause to sing

Ripple and Promise

A ripple on the water
caught my eye today
Squinting in the sunlight
with the New Year underway

In my imagination
I saw hope and promise there
Heralding a brand new start
Reflected in the glare

So I’m trusting to its promise
That hope will stay this year
Like the sunlight on the water
Replete with joy and cheer

New Year Blossoms haiku

Blossom for promise
Twenty-seventeen arrives
pink and baby-like

New Year’s Eve

Last day’s here on New Year’s Eve
Twenty-sixteen breathes its last
The year of fifty-seven summers
fading quickly to the past

It leaves me with a good deal gained
although also with a cost
With Bowie, Prince and Leonard Cohen
and many other loved ones lost

So I’m looking forward to the next one
for some promise and good cheer
As there’s so much to look forward to
with the arrival of New Year

Curtain call for the year

It’s the night time now
the end of line
And, like ships in the night
with silent ci-devant passing
this is the shadow time

Fading now the old year slips
gracefully away
And, with quiet acquiescence
welcomes the dawning of
a bright-clad newborn day

Not long now for the waiting
the new year beams
And, as the last curtain call looms
waiting quietly in the wings
There’s promise here it seems

Dawn, day one and a promise

At the sunrise of
a new year’s dawn
I made a promise
with the morn
January’s here
it’s the first day
twenty-sixteen’s
here to stay

A leap ahead
a one in four
three sixty-six
more days in store
A brand new start
with good intent
begins the year
with merriment

And even though
we have no clue
what days will bring
or what we’ll do
we can make a wish
upon a star
that the year will be
spectacular
