First III (tanka)

3 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 months III’ series

And so November
Colder days have taken hold
as wrapped up people shiver
into winter
With the swansong of Autumn
for the year-end’s curtain call

Tri-Haiku VI (Autumn)

Gold from the sunset
falls as such with autumn leaves
settling to the sea

A sea of crunching
Yellow, reds and gold are here
there beneath my feet

And just like the beach
this November paradise
Autumn comes again

Tri-Haiku III (Windy)

Blustering it blows
Yet autumn’s chill is present
Windy November

In between the grey
white clouds blown across the sky
Sunshine shows its face

Stormy yet still warm
Threatened rain in cloudy skies
Autumn windiness

November II

No. 3 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 Months II’ series

November and the brittle chill
settles on the land
Winter time has come to stay
felt by its colder hand

Eleventh of Gregorian
Chrysanthemum its flower
Topaz as its birthstone
to give the month its power

Yet in the Southern hemisphere
November sees the Spring
and warmer days of sunshine
to cause the heart to sing

Twelve Months Eleven

No 4 of 12 in the ‘Twelve Months’ series

So, rhyming with Chrysanthemum
as that’s November’s flower
I’m struggling I have to say
and I’ve been thinking for an hour
Suffice to say it’s lovely
Myriad petals, subtle shade
A winter flower, resplendent
Attractive when displayed
And yes there’s a conundrum
finding stanzas with a rhyme
Especially with the harder words
One has from time to time

Lazy day – tanka

Breakfast in Brighton
November morning sunshine
follows after rain
Both providing sustenance
for lazy Sunday slowness

Day 7 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Five Lines’ event – a tanka a day for 7 days.

A tanka is a five-line non-rhyming poem of Japanese origin dating back almost 1200 years. Using simile, metaphor and personification, the five lines must follow a syllabic sequence of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7.

November Sun II

And today the sun shone bright
on a November day
Not unpleasant out there
warm, I’d even say
And sitting here at lunchtime
with the water on the lake
It was almost like the summer
whilst I took a well-earned break
I even took my jacket off
and sat in my shirtsleeves
as the sun brought out the highlights
of the golden autumn leaves

November Mnemonic

Now
Overtly chill
Vacant
Echoes
Move
Briskly across the
Ephemeral
Remains of an ever

Moving
November. Swiftly
Ending
Months
Of speculation as
Northern
Icy needles
Chill

Now overtly chill,
vacant echoes move briskly across
the ephemeral remains of an
ever moving November,
Swiftly ending months of
Speculation as Northern
Icy needles chill

November

Leaving the colour
of October behind
I walked into November
with winter in mind
But the ethereal light
spilling there
through the green
made this the warmest
November I’d seen

The path led me onward
but not to the chill
for I remain in the warmth
of Autumn’s goodwill
And though the gold at my feet
will be spent all too soon
for the present I’m staying
in this warm afternoon

November sun

It’s the first day of November
And it feels like summer still
Yet just days ago I fetched my coat
And felt the winter’s chill

I’m absolutely not complaining though
Bring it on, I say
It could stay warm and sunny always
If I had my way

I know it cannot possibly last, so I’ll
Enjoy it whilst it’s here
A little Indian winter bringing
Fortitude and cheer
