Of seagulls and seasons revisited

7 of 12 in ‘The of…’ series from Jemverse 2022

Throughout the year the seagulls
as seasons come and go
are always out there for me
be it sunshine, rain or snow

In the winter and the autumn
In the Springtime when it’s green
In the summer when it’s nice and warm
There are seagulls I’ll have seen

Always out there flying
or swooping ‘cross the sea
I’m so glad I have the seagulls
as they’re part of life for me

Over the years I have titled several poems with the preposition ‘of’ – so this last Jemverse mini-series of 2022 pulls some of those back together again

Seagulls, the sea and a song (reprise #2)

8 of 10 in the Jemverse series ‘Music II’

Alone on the shingle
Salt in my mouth
Braced against wind
Looking to South
Out there in the green
Waves rise and fall
As I listen again
To familiar call
A song just for me
The swoop and the cry
The sea and its music
As seagulls fly by

Seagulls on the wing

Seagulls flying on the wing
on the beach as I
sit outside my beach hut
and watch them hover by
Indicative of all that is
a life beside the sea
this vista with the seagulls
is here a part of me

Of seagulls and the drive to work

Each morning on the way to work
we drive beside the sea
Watching seagulls on the wing
my soulmate, Sal and me

It really is magnificent
to see this day by day
and we’d not swap it for a thing
as we love it just this way

Seeing seagulls flying by
as we drive to work and back
Is something we look forward to
Keeps sanity intact

Me and the seagulls

On the beach here on my day
the best place to be
Outside the beach hut
beside the blue sea
Sou’ Westerly blowing
Waves green and blue
White horses leaping
with surf as they do
And the beach is quite empty
no one else was down there
Just me and the seagulls
the whole place to share

No Fishing

The seagulls were hopeful
as they flew overhead
But the fisherman’s stayed
nice and warm in his bed

And his boat remains covered
with tarpaulin and snow
His nets and his lines
packed away and in stow

No fish trail to follow
on the flat calm today
so no food for the gulls
as they flew on their way

At one

On the old oyster beds
as a tide at mid-ebb gurgles
and glints in the midday sun
Seagulls play and water shines

And across the way
this special moment grabs attention
and captured there I breathe it in
and am at one

Of lions and gulls

In Portsmouth the lions
outside the Guild Hall
sit patiently waiting
and watch over all

They can never of course
leave their posts as that would
disciplinary matters
be as they should

So instead they’re reliant
on gulls playing host
to the messenger service
in from the coast

They’ll speak of the sea
and the to-ing and fro-ing
they see from the sky
wherever they’re going

Of lions and gulls
it’s a partnership thing
which together to us
the truth they will bring

Words about Seagulls

I have written of seagulls
(Well, I would, wouldn’t I?)
As, living in Sussex
you’ll oft hear their cry

They’re as much of a part
of a life by the coast
as the people who live here
The sea playing host

They’re loud and they’re boisterous
with exuberant glee
Born from the thrill
we all get from the sea

And I love every one of them
living down here
As their call and their antics
bring laughter and cheer

So here’s to the seagulls
up there in the clouds
I’m pleased I live with you
May my words do you proud
