Bing was not in Sussex

Bing was certainly not in Sussex
when he sang his famous song
As a white Christmas here
was so far back, so long
that I can scarce remember it
So many years ago
When we enjoyed in Sussex
a little Christmas snow

Yesterday we got a dusting
on December twenty-seven
when a little of the white stuff
found its way to us from heaven
But it didn’t stay for long of course
and soon turned back to rain
So it may be several more years yet
‘Til we see snow again

Complete

6 of 6 in the Jemverse ‘Shoreham’ series

There’s a view which here in Shoreham
is complete in every way
as it epitomises
all about the place, I’d say
It looks across the river
to the church up in the town
Enough to always take away
a trace of any frown
It’s a view which brings me pleasure
coupled with a sense of pride
of Shoreham here in Sussex
the place where I reside

‘Complete’ aptly completes the Jemverse ‘Shoreham’ series. In September that year, the old 1920’s footbridge was closed, demolished and eventually replaced by the new Adur Ferry bridge. The footings for the new bridge differ, changing the view of the town. Still good but not quite as iconic.

Everything

1 of 6 in the Jemverse ‘Shoreham’ series

It has the downs, it has the sea
with a river running through
It has a thousand years of history
for the memories it grew
It has my heart, it has my love
with home right at the centre
It has excitement every day
for a spirit of adventure
It has unique, it has sublime
with everything for me
It has a name, synonymous
with Shoreham by the Sea

Today sees the start of another Jemverse mini-series, this one being six poems about aspects of my home town of Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, UK.

Blue, the beach, twilight and a wander

Lights in the far distance
across the darkening sand
In swiftly facing twilight
as night-time gathers and
the beach and sea reflect the blue
with a peaceful lapping sound
And we’re the only people here
with silence all around

This is a good time for a walk
and the pleasure it will give
Always thankful for this place
of Shoreham where we live

Before the rain

Just before the rain
River water smoothly lies
Ebbing to the sea

Gleaming

Early morning sunrise
on the river smooth and flat
So I had to pause a while
and take a photograph of that
The boats of Shoreham harbour club
Hulls gleaming in the sun
Resplendent here this morning
on a day that’s just begun

I really am a lucky chap
to see this every day
on my daily ride to work
mere words cannot portray
Suffice to say the pleasure
is not lost at all on me
For I’m really very thankful
to live in Shoreham by the sea

Like a dream

There’s a hill above Shoreham
where you can see the sea
shining silver and bright in the sun
A reminder indeed
of the coast where we live
work and play hard and have fun

Yet turning to gaze
at this wonderful sight
yet again it’s a pinch I must give
For it seems like a dream
that I’m here in this place
and what’s more, it is somewhere I live
