40

Forty years ago today
I put my white suit on
The one I bought for twenty quid
in Jayson’s Menswear from
And the only tie I think I had
was a black one from my Dad
and a pair of his old shoes
I’d kept since I was just a lad

My best man Josse was with me
and he did his best I think
to help me look presentable
albeit with a wink
And then when we were ready
we walked down Ashby Road
to meet up with the others
from our single room abode

I was just over twenty
but in my heart I really knew
that love had spoken loud
and clear – this was the thing to do
So Sal and I were married
on the seventh of July
And today we celebrate the fact
of forty years gone by

A ruby anniversary
but far more precious is than that
the love that both of us still share
undeniably a fact
So these words are for my soulmate
repeated here anew
Three words I said both then and now
the adage “I love you”

July

11 of 12 in the Jemverse series ’12 months II’

In seventy-nine
Forty Julys back
two kindred spirits wed
A fledgling love
grown stronger since
and deeper it’s been said

So this series
now at eleven
to my soulmate here I give
These simple words
true from my heart
for the life we share and live

Forty-one valentines

This year, this
Valentines, this day
to you, my soulmate
here I’ll say
Though forty years
and one year longer
My love for you
is ever stronger

We grow together
you and me
A partnership
eternally
So here’s to forty
more, my dear
My friend, my soulmate
Ever here.

If I said…

If I said that I loved you
would you take it as that
Would you just take my word
and accept it as fact
Or would a small smear
of clay on your hand
confirm my intentions
like a seal or a brand

If I said that I loved you
still all these years
that we’ve been together
through joys and tears
Would you smile in that
most inimitable way
which though words sometimes falter
a smile will convey

[A poem for Valentines Day 2018 – our 39th]

Soulmates

First selfie - on board the Spirit – Version 2

Cupid’s arrow may for most
be secret on this day
when anonymity prevails
in messages we say
But for me the message is the same
with thirty-eight cards done
‘I love you more and more each year
For me there’s only one’
And as I am your husband
and you are my special wife
This valentine’s no secret
as we are soulmates for life

Spread the love

Love’s a summer’s day
Love’s an ocean beach
Love is sublime comfort
Love is being free
Love is life lived

Love’s a warm embrace
Love’s a passionate kiss
Love’s a favourite song
Love’s having a soulmate
Love is life’s gift

On a comment to my ‘And…’ poem on 3rd March, Angela at Poetry Pixie invited me to “Spread the Love”. The rules are simple:

  1. Write 10 four-word lines on what love is
  2. Share your favourite quote about love
  3. Nominate ten other bloggers to help ‘Spread the Love’

My favourite love quote is:

When there is love, there is life (Mahatma Ghandi)

And to help ‘Spread the Love’…

Have fun and ‘Spread the Love’

36 words

You’re my soulmate, my wisdom
my solace, my calm
You’re the morning to my every day

Mere words cannot capture
the depth of a love
that has grown in every way

I love you. Be mine?
