Mind’s Eye Travelling

The thing is, when I’m sitting here
and outside it’s cold and raw
I don’t need to dress up warm
to find the places I adore
For travelling within Mind’s Eye
is a special thing
as it allows a freedom
only it can bring

I can travel into Summer
Tread the hills or low tide sand
Feel the sunshine warm upon my head
right across the land
I can travel to a sunrise
out there on sun-kissed seas
treading boards of cruising ships
with warming summer breeze

I am not confined to local
as no limit Mind’s Eye knows
For when I have a picture
to far off lands it goes
And the beauty of this is of course
(which here I’d like to share)
Is that I can do all of these things
whilst sitting in my chair

Train a-trundles

Train a-trundles daily
inland from the sea
cross a river, through the fields
familiar to me
A journey I know all too well
although it differs every day
as the scenery changes
when the weather has its say

Sometimes it is murky
river mist obscures the view
And on other days the sunshine
brings a squint and all’s askew
Some days it is raining
and there’s a monotone of grey
But when there’s blue sky overhead
there is colour every day

Train a-trundles through the winter
when sometimes it is white
A panoramic vista that
provides a lovely sight
And it trundles through the spring
and yes, the summer too
onward into autumn
with its red and golden hue

It doesn’t take me very long
Twenty minutes either way
but it’s regular most working weeks
though not quite every day
And the nicest thing about it
is as I’m travelling through
I can never tire of seeing
something every time anew

Back to my roots

I’m travelling down to Bristol
Just going for the day
Where fifty-seven years ago
to this life I made my way
On the map are several places
Familiar by name
But I’d imagine quite a bit has changed
and it won’t look quite the same

But that aside, it’s really nice
to be back this way once more
Because your birthplace never leaves you
No matter what life has in store
So I’ll take it as I find it
and enjoy just being there
As travelling round the country
Gives me lots more words to share

A weekend away

We’re travelling down to Hampshire
for a mini-holiday
We don’t do this very often
so it’s nice to get away

Staying close to Lyndhurst
the New Forest all around
Taking wellington boots in case
it’s soggy on the ground

Found some dog-friendly watering holes
and a hotel for a nap
Plotted out some walking routes
and marked them on the map

We’re only going for a night
but that will be just fine
For there’s lots for us to see and do
and have a lovely time

The window and the rainbow

Saw a rainbow through the window
travelling on a train
Huge black clouds behind it
bringing lots of rain
Cocooned in warmth, protected
I watched safely as the storm
overtook the sunshine
and grew to monstrous form
But onward sped the carriages
regardless, northern bound
Where several miles along the line
More sunshine there we found

Lights across the city

Bright lights across the city
and me fifteen floors high
I have a perfect vista
‘Neath a dark and starless sky

High above the lane of Bear
In Leeds, West Yorkshire way
Where I’ve travelled to from Southern lands
to work just for a day

It’s so quiet and peaceful
up here, yet very bright
A hundred thousand streetlamps
of a city lit at night

Thank goodness for i-Pods

I have six hours of travelling
to the North East again
As I’m bound for Newcastle
on a Virgin fast train

I’ll pass the time writing
a poem or two
Or watch the world passing
outside, like you do

There’s chatter all round me
from the passengers here
Though the chap alongside
is coughing, I fear

Thank goodness for i-Pods
for I can lose myself there
Just listen to music
and become unaware

Forty winks will let
all that time slip away
For a Newcastle arrival
at just past midday
