In from the fog

I could tell by all the seagulls
and the chap up on the prow
getting ropes all ready
that we were nearing Porto now

But the sea fog on the water
kept the land just out of sight
until a lighthouse appeared slowly
in the early morning light

The thrusters turned the ship around
The pilot did his thing
and as the fog swirled all around us
the Spirit docked and settled in

Vigo

We actually weren’t expecting rain
but it only stayed an hour
Refreshing as we climbed the hill
for the Vigo castle tower
The view up at the very top
took in the sweeping bay
with our ship down in the harbour
on this, our third cruise day

Then later, as the sun appeared
in Constitution Square
we sat and had Galation beer
and watched the tourists there
Vigo is a special place
at the tip of Northern Spain
and is somewhere we would gladly
come back and see again

Three sixty degree seas

Three seagulls have been following
and flying in our wake
Means we must be close to land
of that there’s no mistake
For though three sixty round about
Iberian waters lie
we’re fairly close to Portugal
the seagulls seemed to cry
By way of confirmation
they flew away those three
off to somewhere in the east
where tomorrow we will be

Lounging

Every inch of deck space
where there’s a little sun
was taken up with loungers
since the day had just begun
Reservation is forbidden
but people do it all the time
Leave their towels then disappear
It really is a crime
But never mind, we found a place
Sheltered, in the lea
where the sun is bright and warm
and we can watch the passing sea
I’ve walked the promenade, deck 6
Two miles, eleven laps
where, excepting gales around the prow
made it without mishaps
So now it’s time to sit and chill
with my iPod and a book
Glancing up from time to time
to the ocean for a look

All at sea

There’s a world outside my window
but I’m all at sea today
Sunshine through the porthole
with waves out there at play
The Spirit’s cutting westward
but it has a way to go
and with sea all the way round us
a true ocean voyage we’ll know
We’re at the edge of the Atlantic
having left the Med behind
A day at sea awaits us
Many pleasures still to find
