Breakwater sunshadow

Breakwater sunshadow
inspiration to me
speak of a time
I recall vividly

When Victorian lines
to the low water reach
with sea-sculpted grandeur
adorned every beach

They’re mostly gone now
a time casualty
more’s the pity I’d say
but that may just be me

So today when I spy
breakwaters there still
I’ll take pictures and gaze
’till I’ve had my fill

Breakwater sunshadow
inspiration to me
remind me of times
I recall vividly

More than fifty years on
and the smell on the air
is the same to me now
as it was way back there
That of sea and the tar
and the pitch and the oil
and the sweat and the grime
from the long days of toil
Down there on the docks
though so much has changed
some things like the smells
are exactly the same

Beach Hut weather revisited

7 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Beach Huts’ series

Felt quite low for several days
but then the sun arrived
Opened up the beach hut
glad to be alive
Wandered round the market
picked up a few cheap things
Watched the plovers playing
fishing on the wing

Saw a rabbit on the beach
frolicking about
Holly learned to fly a kite
got the nets back out
Brewed up coffee on the stove
lounged about in chairs
Forgot all about the world out there
our worries and our cares

The children found the sand again
with their buckets and their spades
And though the sea was pretty cold
we had a little wade
Chucked a Frisbee in the wind
sketched a little bit
Wrote a poem in my book
ate some chocolate bics

Hope this beach hut weather stays
now for a little while
As we need a perk back up again
and learn again to smile

Haven by the sea revisited

6 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Beach Huts’ series

Opened up the beach hut
which needs a lick of paint
But it’s still a lovely place to be
All ours and very quaint

We used to paint it ‘beach-hut white’
by regulation every year
But now the rules have been relaxed
and colour has appeared

It won’t take long, I’m sure of that
and in the August sun
We’ll spend some time with cans of paint
until the job is done

Yellow’s nice and so is green
but with ocean in plain sight
a blue reflecting sea and sky
is justified and right

It remains a lovely place to come
and with some work and TLC
We’ll keep our beach hut spick and span
in our haven by the sea

Privilege to share revisited

5 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Beach Huts’ series

Another lovely end of day
in my favourite place
Sitting in the sunshine
with a big smile on my face

I’d take a little selfie
but I’m pretty sure that you
Would rather see some beach huts
from my favourite sea view

It really is a privilege
that’s not lost on me each day
Pausing as I cycle home
‘Cos it’s always on my way

I’ll watch the sea a little while
and write a poem in my book
Capturing words of what I see
as it’s always worth a look

Perhaps some day you’ll join me
I have some deckchairs spare
As it would be a pleasure
This view with you to share

Painted (revisited)

4 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Beach Huts’ series

The day began with sunshine
so I popped down to the beach
armed with paints and brushes
and a long pole for to reach
the top bit of the beach hut
as it needs a lick of paint
It took me several hours
but a craftsman I just ain’t
It wouldn’t cut the mustard
with a decorator man
But it’s weatherproof and brighter
and I’m pleased with it, I am

Our happy place II revisited

3 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Beach Huts’ series

Took a trip to the beach hut
It’s looking quite good
If you don’t look too close
at the oft patched up wood
The locks opened fine
with some lubricant there
and it doesn’t look like
it needs much repair

Even the paint job
I gave it last year
has weathered well in the winds
that blast around here
And the view of the sea
is (as ever) divine
Particularly now when
the weather is fine
