When the rain came at last
it was long overdue
not that the sunshine
we'd ever eschew
But the ground was so parched
and the water was low
so the need was profound
for the reservoir flow
And the farmers and gardeners
were mighty relieved
as the long lack of rainfall
had left them all peeved
So we danced as the patter
of raindrops fell fast
and the temperature dropped
for some respite at last
Went for a walk on the beach
in the morning
at first light of day when
most still were snoring
It was quiet and peaceful
just the sound of the sea
and the crunch of the shingle
the wave fall and me
Some say it debilitates
that may be true
yet never from sunshine
you'll see me eschew
for as had been said here
many times in the past
I was born of the summer
and that fact will last
So to sunshine and warmth
I will gravitate and
promulgate all its virtues
so you'll understand
A new pen in my poet's hand
always brings a joy
something it has always done
since I was just a boy
It's all about the tactile
and the way the ink just flows
that makes me want to write and
see how to the page it goes
In my solace and respite
with the sun streaming in
I'm at home in my room
as you'll see from my grin
for all that is in here
is here to bring joy
with things I've collected
since I was a boy
It's here that I write
and here that I play
be it music or games
sitting here day by day
It brings 'joie de vivre'
my raison d'être
for all inspiration
in life that I share
Who'd have thought it in the eighties
when vinyl was slipping
that we'd see all the usurpers fade
to crown again the king
Compact cassettes and eight-track
DAT, mini-disc, CD
all claimed to be the next best thing
to set the vinyl free
And yet in the twenty-twenties
vinyl sales are through the roof
with just streaming the contender
to undermine its truth
In my garden at nightfall
when the sun has just set
and the heat of the day still remains
I find solace and respite
as on my bench with repose
I appreciate all of life's gains
For here is a moment
which is all of my own
precious like treasure, replete
and as the light of the day
is enveloped by night
congenital here, I'm complete
Purple fields
fragrance high
sunshine bright
deep a sigh
Lavender
in perfect rows
ripe for harvest
summer knows
Healing here
in nature’s hand
growing on the
Sussex land
A little piece
of heaven here
oozing peace and
bringing cheer
It possesses a certain
something that soothes
and reminds me of summer
with its calming moods
Just a squeeze of the sachet
when winter is here
or a rub between fingers
when summer is near
brings out that pure fragrance
that, with purest intent
and a small play on words
is to me ‘heavenscent’
...all about me and my life in words. I write most days, carrying an ideas book around in which I capture a word snapshot of life around me. So there's a lot here about Sussex and the sea and anything else I see that inspires.
The pictures are mine too. Some taken to match a poem; some poems written to match a pic; others chosen because they work well with words written.
Jemverse is life in words. Hope you enjoy the reading as much as I enjoy the writing...
