Friday afternoons

Friday afternoons are great
‘Cos I don’t have to work too late
I’ll aim to finish at Midday
the weekend starts, Hip Hip Hooray!

Maybe some music and a beer
to set the mood and bring the cheer
As then the time is a good friend
‘Til Monday morning comes again

Favourite things

The beach at any time of year
The sea, my friend, to bring me cheer

Lavender in purple fields
Walking in the Sussex Weald

Music as my food for life
My lovely children and my wife

My dogs, the young one and the old
who understand me, so I’m told

Treasures all with songs to sing
These are all my favourite thing

Fields of Lavender

We walked in fields of lavender
on the sixth day of July
On a summer evening
beneath a clear blue sky
Lordington near Chichester
high on Sussex hills
to watch the setting of the sun
A cure to cure all ills

A setting here for lovers
romancing with a smile
on this our anniversary
(We stayed for quite a while)
The sun sank low, the fragrance grew
as we sat and watched the scene
here amongst the lavender
my soulmate Sal and me

The chance to walk in and watch the sun set over the lavender fields with a glass of wine. Perfect for our 39th wedding anniversary this year.

The colour of rain

I saw splashes of colour
like rain falling down
A rainstorm of rainbows
to dispel any frown
So I danced as the colour
fell all around me
soaking and soothing
and setting me free

What the summer’s for

There’s a lone kite surfer
out on the seas
dancing on waves
in an easterly breeze
The tide’s on the turn
and is going out now
but the sun is still strong
and warm on my brow

So I’ll sit here a while
as the evening draws in
on a beach here in Sussex
with my wide summer grin
For the sound of the waves
as they break on the shore
is what life’s about
and the summer is for

Mr Brown and the bees

Mr Brown (not his name)
just a name that we gave
has a hive in his hut
which he’s trying to save
A man with a pole
and a spray and a hat
came and prodded about
and it seemed that was that

But the bees were quite savvy
and wise to the plot
as this seemed a nice place
and they liked this fine spot
So they didn’t play ball
just buzzed all around
And Mr Brown and his friend
weren’t pleased with the sound

Yet they made best of it
and after a while
were doing a dance
on the beach for a smile
The bees they joined in
and because of the heat
Mr Brown and his friend
made a hasty retreat

The bees then went back
to their hive in the hut
and settled right down
when the door it was shut
Mr Brown and his friend
with the pole and the hat
jumped up and down
with annoyance at that

No doubt they be back
with a box and some gloves
to find a new home
for the bees they will love
But for now the last word
with a sting in the tail
is held by the bees
and me here to regale

I didn’t get a pic of Mr Brown’s dance with the bees as I was (at the time) bent over double with laughter. So here’s a pic of the Lancing beach green huts where this story is based. Photo – Jempics

Horse in the water

Horse on the beach
with his hooves in the water
Well, why not, I thought
in this weather he oughta
‘Cos if people can paddle
then why not a horse
No reason to think of
and just right of course

For it’s balmy and hot
though it’s six in the evening
so it’s nice to cool off
in this sea air we’re breathing
And the beach is for all
if you’ve two legs or four
And when the tide’s at an ebb
you could not ask for more
