A little yellow…

A little yellow’s what I need
Springtime needs to be here now
Winter’s overstayed its welcome
time to leave and take a bow

Sunshine with its warmer feeling
needed more than I can say
Come as precursor to summer
Welcome now and with us stay

Good friend music

Open fire, St James’
folk music and a beer
My soulmate and two daughters
on a Sunday with me here

Waiting for the music, chilled
good conversation flows
The band arrives, the music plays
and dancing with it grows

The rhythm and the atmosphere
the tapping of the feet
and us beside the roaring fire
enjoying welcome heat

Lamb’s Green Yellow

In Lamb’s Green the daffodils
have made an appearance
Spring waits there in the wings

And the yellow is welcome as
it speaks of the sun and
echoes as Nature she sings

Free

Today I found freedom
and went for a run
in Simon’s Field, Faygate
with frolics and fun

Basil was with me
in meadow ground
content as he was
to go plodding around

But me I was lightning
and as fast as could be
making the most of
the joy to be free

Spring

Counting days til sunshine
and the pleasure that will bring
with long hours at the beach hut
in the warmer days of Spring

Hidden Truth

Fragrance of the harbour
Familiar to me
with salt and oil and pitch and tar
and yes, of course, the sea

Memories of the harbour
treasures from my youth
Those halcyon days that carry
so much hidden truth

The last of it…?

Thought we’d seen the last of it
in the sunshine yesterday
So little did we spare a thought
for more snow on the way
And yet first thing this morning
another blanket on the ground
white replacing yellow
with snowfall all around

Diamond Days

Some days are diamond
the sea and the sky
azure blue with the sun
up there on high

Some days are damond
more precious than gold
when a sunshine embrace
brings me in from the cold

Some days are diamond
every once in a while
just there in time
for a beam and a smile

Some days are diamond
and I’ll laugh right out loud
for these days do justice
and serve my heart proud

Breakwater sunshadow

Breakwater sunshadow
inspiration to me
speak of a time
I recall vividly

When Victorian lines
to the low water reach
with sea-sculpted grandeur
adorned every beach

They’re mostly gone now
a time casualty
more’s the pity I’d say
but that may just be me

So today when I spy
breakwaters there still
I’ll take pictures and gaze
’till I’ve had my fill

Breakwater sunshadow
inspiration to me
remind me of times
I recall vividly

Same

More than fifty years on
and the smell on the air
is the same to me now
as it was way back there
That of sea and the tar
and the pitch and the oil
and the sweat and the grime
from the long days of toil
Down there on the docks
though so much has changed
some things like the smells
are exactly the same
