Embers II

Embers glowing
breezes blowing
caution throwing
here is youth

Embers glowing
clear the flowing
honest showing
not uncouth

Embers glowing
flicker going
I am knowing
this is truth

My blue seat

This seat out in the garden
like my neckerchief is blue
so I’ll often come and lie here
in the sunshine as you do
It’s perfect for my little legs
to lie on and relax
quite thoughtful of my humans
to provide for little chaps

The Lotty

The Lotty’s looking wild this year
we haven’t been there much
Lockdown saw to most of that
but we’ve still kept in touch

Emily’s been there more than us
and kept it in some shape
but living several miles away
it’s quite a trip to make

So long grass meadow is the norm
with wood chip in between
coupled with a lovely pond
the best we’ve ever seen

The sage and all the lavender
with fruit bushes have born
a harvest to be grateful for
whilst the weather has been warm

But as with all experiments
and a woeful lack of rain
some things have not fared quite so well
which really is a shame

Still, the Lotty’s looking lovely
and I’m pleased it’s there to share
as there’s always other stuff to grow
whenever we are there

So we might find a root crop
or some vegetables that need
less water there to prosper
when we’re not around to feed

Because we will keep on coming
and we’ll always lend a hand
as the Lotty is quite special
and our own small plot of land

Sorted

Had a bit of a sort out
and found lots of things
some purchased at random
in one of those flings
Others forgotten
or just put away
on a whim and a fancy
on one rainy day

But now it is summer
they could see light again
taken out and enjoyed
with no one to blame
And then found a place
with all on display
to be used when they’re needed
not hidden away

So when I had finished
I stood back with a smile
and vowed that next time
it would be shorter while
As it’s nice to find things
for enjoyment and leisure
and use them again
where they can bring pleasure

My hidden way

Took myself back round the Circle
starting with Mill Hill
heading to the chalky Slonk
my boots with joy to fill
Said hello to rabbits
and horses in the field
Took in long the valley view
across the Sussex Weald

Found my path, my secret
trod here so many days
known only to myself I think
these hidden Sussex ways
For this it is my happy place
and here I am my own
so pleased that I can come here
as it’s so close to my home

Seemed appropriate

So I laid out in the sunshine
let my thoughts just drift away
Seemed appropriate to do this
on such a lovely day

The sunshine it was warming
and it was peaceful there
quietly in my garden
to relax without a care

It bordered on subliminal
exquisite and replete
a moment shared with no one
out in the summer heat

Another five days

I can rise when I like
but I’m up with the lark
as I want to see all of the day
For here are five more
for what lies in store
to do with as I like or I may

I may write a few words
over coffee at first
and then go and sit in the sun
Repot a plant
‘cos there’s nothing I can’t
do as I like til I’m done

I may chill to some music
on a will or a whim
or go for a walk on the hill
for I have five days
to appease my malaise
which I’ll use as I want and I will

Sweet Pea Vibrant

These sweet pea colours vibrant
fill our garden with their joy
their aim to please and satisfy
self-evident thieir ploy
Success, just like their name is sweet
with purples, reds and blue
this painting full of colour
we will never here eschew

That lavender time again V

Permeating everywhere
heaven’s scent again
that ‘lavender time’ is here once more
bring on that sweet refrain

An afternoon spent bagging it
that heady fragrance there
as I breathe in its loveliness
a thing beyond compare

And what is totally sublime
is that throughout the year
I simply have to squeeze a bag
to rekindle summer cheer

[In July each year, one of my favourite pastimes is a day spent bagging the dried crop from my annual lavender harvest. Although I’ve been doing this for years, the last five (2016 through 2020) have been marked with a ‘That lavender time again’ poem, added to Jemverse on 23 July each year]

Words Waiting

I am an early hour
when the quiet of night
shouts loud
and a pen hovers
heavy over virgin sheets
with words waiting

I am a tired eye
close to slumber and yet
awake to words
For this is poetry
captured in an instant
waiting for no one
There on the cusp
of inspiration
