Lavender for a smile

Yes, I know it looks lovely
in the sunshine out there
But, cropped now its fragrance
is filling the air
So, for double the pleasure
I have a lavender pile
Whilst outside there’s new growth
with crop two for a smile

The beach and me (part II)

It’s much better down here today
the sun is with me and, hey
though the South-Westerly is still pretty strong
it’s blowing me home all the way

There are lots more kite-surfers out
but still almost no-one about
and though there’s a breeze it’s very warm still
so you’d still get a tan without doubt

There’s blue in the sky out to sea
and, in shelter, it’s most definitely
an afternoon to be out in the sun
just the beach and the ocean and me

The beach and me

And on the beach last evening
hoping for some sun
I planned to have a beer
when my working day was done
Just one little problem
and I’m not trying to lay blame
But when I got there last evening
the sky was full of rain

The wind, a strong South-Westerly
was whipping up the sea
so the beach was quite deserted
Just some kite-surfers and me
It was still quite warm despite all that
so I still had my beer
As the beach is always special
whenever I am here

Two gulls and a fine morning

Two gulls perched on beach huts
facing out to sea
and as I passed by on my bike
they turned to look at me
I bade them a ‘Good Morning’
and I’m pretty sure that they
said same in seagull language
as I hurried on my way

It was very quiet and peaceful
in the early morning light
The sky there tinged with yellow
and the sea a calming sight
On the beach down here in Sussex
I love it at this time
Especially on days like this
when the weather’s warm and fine

Gleaming

Early morning sunrise
on the river smooth and flat
So I had to pause a while
and take a photograph of that
The boats of Shoreham harbour club
Hulls gleaming in the sun
Resplendent here this morning
on a day that’s just begun

I really am a lucky chap
to see this every day
on my daily ride to work
mere words cannot portray
Suffice to say the pleasure
is not lost at all on me
For I’m really very thankful
to live in Shoreham by the sea

Haven by the sea

Opened up the beach hut
which needs a lick of paint
But it’s still a lovely place to be
All ours and very quaint
We used to paint it ‘beach-hut white’
by regulation every year
But now the rules have been relaxed
and colour has appeared
It won’t take long, I’m sure of that
and in the August sun
We’ll spend some time with cans of paint
until the job is done
Yellow’s nice and so is green
but with ocean in plain sight
a blue reflecting sea and sky
is justified and right
It remains a lovely place to come
and with some work and TLC
We’ll keep our beach hut spick and span
in our haven by the sea

Turning wheels

Now that it’s full summer
and Southern Rail has lost the plot
I thought I’d get back on the bike
and cycle whilst it’s hot
I leave in early morning
when the dawn has just arrived
and everything is quiet
and the peace is not contrived.

It really is a lovely time
to get out on the bike
There aren’t that many cars and
clear roads are what I like
But when I get down to the beach
and ride along the coast
and see the open ocean
That’s the bit I like the most

It’s a clear run through to Worthing
nine miles beside the sea
Takes around forty minutes
the wind – South Westerly
And words come whilst wheels are turning
verses forming in my mind
Inspiration evident
so they’re not that hard to find

I’ll watch the sea beside me
and when, once in a while
another cyclist passes by
I’ll wave and give a smile
It’s a lovely way to travel
with freedom guaranteed
Just me with turning wheels
on my trusty Kona steed

The sun, some flowers and a smile

Nasturtiums and Geraniums
in the bright sunshine
Taking pictures of them out there
because all of these are mine
Oranges and yellows
offset by splash of pink
All looking pretty lovely
and splendid, don’t you think?

Occasionally a bumble bee
will visit for a while
And fairly often, butterflies
which always bring a smile
Summer in my garden
is a very special time
Especially when the sun comes out
and the weather is so fine

That lavender time again

I’m capturing the summer
on this fine sunshine day
With a little bit of lavender
to keep the blues away
Cropped this year’s first harvest
into baskets there to dry
but there’s plenty more still growing
to keep me satisfied
It’s something that I always do
around this time of year
And gladly with a smile and
an abundance of good cheer

The satisfaction of a quiet morning

IMGP4837

And in these quiet moments
at the beginning of the day
the peace each brand new morning brings
before the frack and fray
I breathe, I smile, I lift my head
and look up to the sky
safe in this brief contentment
which will always satisfy
