Saw my first bluebells
in the sunshine today
Quite close to the river
down Old Shoreham way
All there in a cluster
with joy to regale
growing wild by the wayside
Beside the old trail

Walking on the riverbank
with a jumping Patterdale
On a sunday afternoon
with a waggy tail
He’s happy to be there
as are we this lovely day
The old Tollbridge behind us
for a wander and a play
Good conversation flowing
enjoying being here
in each other’s company
with plenty of good cheer
There’s lots to see around here
This place has that in spades
and the marvellous thing about it
is the magic never fades

Life has its moments
Some happy, some sad
But I have my one constant
Of which I am glad
For no matter what
Life can throw at me
One thing never changes
My constant, the sea

With every breaking wave
I see a part of me
My life down here in Sussex
In Shoreham by the sea
So taciturn, its nuances
Reflect the changing years
An echo to my lost and loved
My joy, my smiles, my tears
With every breaking wave
I count the blessings that have passed
And with its incessant movement
Know I have not seen the last
So beautiful, its eloquence
Is never lost on me
Its movement as a promise
From my confidant, the sea.

I am restless
I sleep little, always moving I toss and turn
I rise up and fall down
I am often angry, losing my temper
I am taciturn and dangerous
I am deceitful and untrustworthy
I am lies and broken promises and disappointment
But…
I am also beautiful
I am sparkling in the sunshine
I am golden in the dawn’s still light
I am ethereal and whimsy and dreamlike
I am the words of poetry and prose
I am the emphasis of story
I am the syntax of verse
I am simply always
I am the sea.

Elegant green whisper away
soft the turning sea
Shingle drift, the undertow
pulls back to stiffened breeze
Ebb once more again my friend
Egged on by seagull’s call
From Worthing in the sunglare
to Brighton’s massive sprawl
Hasten now the ocean’s roar
Tumble down the waves
Crescendo to that sweetest song
on this midsummer day
So blue the sky, so sweet the taste
The salt upon my breath
Embraced again, beholden to
the ocean’s soft caress

Think I’ll go sit in the sea
Let the waves wash over me
One of the best places to be
When I am feeling like this
Think I’ll go play in the sand
Build something with my own hand
A castle that’s splendid and grand
Where I will then live in bliss
Think I will let go and fly
Up with the seagulls on high
But then I will awake by and by
With a caress from the breeze and a kiss

Hidden in your moving green and grey
I see your missing smile
But, braced against the salt-sting blast,
Calm will return a while
You change. but with eyes closed
That sweet, familiar taste
Reminds me of sultry summer days
Beneath this winter waste
Loosing myself in your expression, I see change
But it matters not to me
Fickle it may be, yet your promise there
Reminds me of what you are, the sea

I watched the sea, it did me proud
I smiled at it and laughed out loud
The waves they roared, I roared right back
As I wasn’t having any of that
Alone on the stone with sun and spray
On a fine and perfect Springtime day
On the shoreline with the crashing sounds
That filled the air and shook the ground
I shouted loud, could not be heard
Save by a high fly seagull bird
Green and blue the waters came
Crashed and turned and crashed again
Alone I stood and marvelled still
At those impressive seascape hills

There are tiny white horses out there
Scampering daintily over the hills
That form as the wavelets tumble
Rolling over a sandscape
Glistening in the evening sun
And the wind seems to have dropped
I can taste the salt and feel
the warmth of a setting sun
bright in my face and radiant
with the fulness this near to
perfect day has afforded
Glistening in the evening sun
And basking in its warmth
A fresh revelation of something new
Heralding a season where we shall live again
And sleep no more.
