It’s magical this snow-cast light
the icing sugar dust
as slowly things are covered
and capture it I must
Iron-chill the Northern blast
makes minus five feel raw
yet still the child within me yearns
for snow on snow and more
Househound here the nation wanes
to bleak midwinter flow
But doesn’t really mind because
there’s nowhere else to go
So gazing whimsically outside
as whiteness thickens there
we welcome inner child-like glee
and in this beauty share

It wasn’t very nice
in my field this week you know
Cos my paws felt very cold
in some white stuff they call snow
I had a double layer
(my red jumper and a coat)
but my paws still feel the cold
(I’m just saying, make a note)
Of course I’d never let them know
Cos this place it is the best
as I can get to run around
for ages without rest
It’s muddy now and squelchy
but the paths I find are dry
and my humans never seem to mind
as I go running by
But this cold stuff takes the biscuit
and I’m not keen I’ll have you know
even though my humans
seem to really love the snow

I said no snow
in Sussex fell
but spoke too soon
(how could I tell)?
the temperature
would fall so quick
and the isobars
take such a dip
allowing white stuff
here to fall
at beckon to
the winter’s call
But really we had
better hurry
as small the flakes
and brief the flurry
It’s petering out
here as I speak
outside my window
as I peek
and is it settling?
no it’s not
‘Cos here in Sussex
it’s too hot
Exaggeration?
perhaps a bit
but the snow is
having none of it
But we will still
whilst it is here
run round outside
with laughs and cheer
tongue stuck out
to taste a flake
we’ll seize the moment
here to take
and run around
as Sussex snows
before it stops
and off it goes

In Yorkshire it was snowing
I heard online today
whereas down south in Sussex
it was simply dull and grey
In fact I can’t remember
the last time snow I saw
must have been some years ago
before a winter’s thaw
Hardly that surprising though
as here in warmer climes
coupled with the salty air
bodes ill for snowy times
Yet part of me was jealous
just a little for some snow
as it really is quite beautiful
when winter’s in full flow

They must be laughing up in Norway
or in Canada you know
at the fuss we make in England
when we have a little snow
Sides they must be splitting
Out in Russia, Moscow way
as our headlines speak of chaos
caused by snow that fell today
And the mirth that must be flowing
Out in Switzerland as we
get all up tight and flustered
with the white stuff that we see
For though yesterday the snow
covered England for a bit
the sunshine here this morning
has melted most of it!

I wrap up warm
against the cold
I feel it now
I’m getting old
There’s white on
everything around
The air is crystal
n’er a sound.
Suppress a shiver
to the chill
I take this in
and have my fill
For only winter
brings this sight
This wonderment
when all is white

They said there’d be snow
Well, its cold enough
and there’s frost over all every day
But the sea air down here
on these southern shores
always seems to get well in the way
Yes, there have been falls
which have settled for days
in the past I remember quite well
But it’s still quite a rarity
for us in these parts
when snow of the settling kind fell
Tonight we will know
for that’s when they said
that the white stuff will fall from the sky
So maybe tomorrow
a blanket we’ll find
over all that we see by and by
And some time after that
Winter’s beauty we’ll see
Over Sussex at least for a while
Its crystalline essence
providing the prompt
that will always result in a smile

Thought we’d seen the last of it
in the sunshine yesterday
So little did we spare a thought
for more snow on the way
And yet first thing this morning
another blanket on the ground
white replacing yellow
with snowfall all around

Icing sugar on the road
a dusting overnight
the sun glow in the eastern sky
still a glorious sight
Cold there is no doubt of that
minus six and falling
but the crystal air is lovely
on this chilly winter morning
Ethereal and silent
there’s no one else around
the snow lies like a whisper
like a blanket on the ground
And I feel like an intruder
as I venture out today
so caught up in the moment
that I have no words to say

The seagulls were hopeful
as they flew overhead
But the fisherman’s stayed
nice and warm in his bed
And his boat remains covered
with tarpaulin and snow
His nets and his lines
packed away and in stow
No fish trail to follow
on the flat calm today
so no food for the gulls
as they flew on their way
