Walking to Africa

With best foot forward this New Year
determination sets my gait
with a virtual walk to Africa
as several million steps await

And it seems I'm not the only one
as in the rain today
I spied outside a gathering
of cyclists on their way

I'm guessing that their riding goal
was somewhat less than mine
particularly as the weather is
today far less than fine

Yet later in that same malaise I
stepped out on a Shank's Pony
a few more steps towards the goal
which may at times be lonely

But the purpose twofold resolute
will keep my best foot walking
with daily exercise to prove
with action over talking

[This year (2022) I’ve joined the ‘World Walking’ app and am using it, via two groups, to put my daily steps count to still better use. Two virtual walks: one around the coast of Africa (62,073,860 steps!) and one through all the counties of England (3,979,169 steps!). We’re over 1% on both already!]

Ambition

Yesterday as I waited
in a hotel’s busy lobby
writing a new poem which
’til now has been a hobby
A thought occurred and took good form
as a proactive pre-condition
to publish a collection
as has long been my ambition

I’ll still use my social media
and my Jemverse blog of course
For the joy of writing daily
is best released at source
But research now for outlets
in the e-world and elsewhere
is a need I feel I must fulfil
as I have much to share

Angel wing wishes

Challenged to a ‘bucket list’
Thought, “that’s a good idea”
So here’s a little list of mine
Repeated for you here

In no particular order
these are my top ten things
that I would really love to do
before I get my angel wings

Pompeii and the Parthenon
I have already seen
Both were on my bucket list
But to both I have now been

France’s Languedoc region fascinates
It’s history calls to me
Exploring caves and castles
I’ve long wanted for to see

Further distant are the pyramids
The great wall of China too
More history of the ancient kind
Both I’ve longed to do

I’d like to live somewhere really hot
A Greek island for a while
For the sunshine is a friend of mine
And always brings a smile

I want to see each of my four children
As successful as can be
With lives full of enrichment
Born from pure vitality

And a published collection of my verse
Would be absolutely great
For when done I could recite it
As I’ve started to of late

I’d love an AC Cobra, polished chrome
And cobalt blue
It’s always been my dream car
A thoroughbred and British too

Then at two thousand seven hundred
and ninety five long miles
Walking the England Coastal path
would take me quite a while

But I think I’ll have time to fit it in
With all the other things
That feature in this list of mine
Before I see those angel wings
